ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to investigate the dynamic impact of human capital and economic growth in West African countries. This shows that human capital is a key to the relevance of other forms of capital. To better understand human capital and economic growth, this study investigates the “dynamics of human capital and economic growth in West African countries” from 7 sampled West African countries covering a period of 17 years (2000-2019) based on annual panel series data availability. Five macroeconomic variables were selected based on theoretical and empirical evidence. The study conducted pre-estimation tests such as; summary descriptive statistics, Pearson’s matrix correlations and panel unit root test. The test results revealed that, the variables under study are properly screened for more advanced statistical regressions. The study employed econometric techniques in order to gallantly capture the objectives for which the study is poised to achieve; this included panel VAR, Others ancillary to the panel VAR includes; Impulse Response Charts (IRC), residual diagnostics of heteroskedasticity and Eigen-Value stability tests. From the panel VAR, results opine that the effectiveness of GEE and GEH on LE and LR was not felt in West African countries; this could mean that corruption is at work. Therefore, the study recommends that, West African government financial allocations to education and health sectors should be carefully monitored.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the effect of monitoring mechanisms on corporate environmental accounting disclosure of Nigerian listed Deposit Money Banks (DMB’s) for the period of 2010 – 2019. The population and the sample size of the study consist of the fourteen (14) listed Nigerian DMBs as at 31st December, 2019. Specifically, the study seeks to find out if monitoring mechanisms (proxied by firm size, firm age, leverage, dividend and earnings) have any effect on banks’ corporate environmental accounting disclosures (CEADs). The study employed multiple regression techniques and data were collected from secondary source through the annual reports and accounts of the listed firms. The findings reveal that firm size, firm age and dividend per share are statistically, positively and significantly influencing the CEA disclosures of Nigerian listed DMBs but at 1% level of significance, while leverage and earnings per share were found to be statistically and insignificantly related with CEA disclosures. The study recommended that banks’ management should intensify efforts towards expanding their assets, justifying the reasons for their quotation, making high and a consistent dividend payment, strengthening their earnings generation capacity while improving their gearing ratio through ensuring a reasonable balance between debt and equity as it has been found empirically to be a monitoring attributes for banks to engage in corporate environmental accounting disclosures.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of monetary policy decision on profitability of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. Data for the study were gathered through Annual Reports and Accounts of the deposit money banks and Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Nigeria for the period of 2008-2017. Data was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Multiple regression analysis was employed to test the hypothesis using the STATA 13. Findings of the study revealed that monetary policy rate (MPR), cash reserve rate (CRR) have no statistically significant impact on the return on capital employed of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. Implying that an increase in MPR leads to a non-significant decrease in return on capital employed (proxy for profitability). It was also found that cash reserve ratio has an insignificant linear relationship with return on capital employed of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. This means an upward movement in monetary policy decision does not have any significant impact on the return on capital employed of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. The research therefore recommends the need by the C.B.N. to ensure that adequate monetary policy rate is put in place to improve the significance in terms of safeguarding the impetus of monetary policy decision in the Nigerian economy. The study also recommends the need for managers of these banks to fully adhere to the CRR policy by organising more training and workshops to staff on the importance of preserving and adhering to the monetary policy decision for the effective and efficient operationalisation of the deposit money banks in the short-run and a better health: on banking industry in the long-run.

ABSTRACT

Despite the vital roles of channel members in the chain of distribution, the single remains more beneficial to the end user (the consumer), due to price reduction, availability of the product, personal relationship with the producer etc. which will also trigger demand that will improve the Nigerian economy and reduce overdependence on petroleum. This research, therefore, seeks to identify the longitudinal channels in the distribution of cows and other related animals; their roles and effects on price and the Nigerian Economy. Primary data was collected in this study taking into cognizance the sample population in the cattle markets who are mostly illiterates, therefore questionnaire and interview questions drawn out of the four research question was administered on 315 and respondents at the two (2) cattle markets. Data collected from the respondents was analsed using correlation and regression models. Findings of study revealed that  all the distribution strategies have significant effect on price of cattle and other animals. The study also found that by adopting a single channel strategy as against multiple channels, prices can be minimized. The researchers conclude that buying cattle directly from the people rearing it is better than buying from the distributor or retailers. We therefore recommends that government and other stakeholders in the cattle business should come up with a well-articulated policy on the trading of these animals that will reduce or eliminate the activities of these middle men in order to achieve price stability which can improve the economy as a whole.

FINANCIAL LIBERALIZATION AND MANUFACTURING SECTOR OUTPUTS IN NIGERIA (1987-2015): EVIDENCE FROM FULLY MODIFIED ORDINARY LEAST SQUARE (FMOLS)

ADEYEYE-AHMED NABILA OLASUMBO; DALLAS CHUKWUEMEKA LIVINUS; & POPOOLA SAMUEL OLAYINKA

National Productivity Centre, Lagos State Office.

Abstract

There has been a growing concern over the decline of the outputs of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria in recent times in-spite of the view that government had embarked on several strategies aimed at improving industrial production and capacity utilization of the sector. Manufacturing firms in Nigeria are generally characterized by inadequate capital base, low managerial skills, and high levels of technical inefficiency, which tends to reduce their potential output levels significantly. The study therefore undertakes an empirical analysis to examine the effect financial liberalization on the growth of manufacturing sector outputs in Nigeria between 1987 and 2015 using Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS). Findings from the study revealed that liberalization of the Nigerian financial system through the credits allocated to the manufacturing sectors has had an adverse boomerang effect on manufacturing sector outputs in the long run. Low manufacturing sector outputs was traced largely to banks unwillingness to make credits available to manufacturers, owing partly to this mis-match between the short-term nature of banks funds and the medium to long-term nature of funds needed by Nigerian industries. Increased lending rate (due to liquidity mopping) was also discovered to have a dampening effect on manufacturing sector outputs despite significant increase in gross national savings. Therefore, to support the liberalization process, there is the need for monetary authorities to create and maintain a stable macro-financial environment based on increased financial depth. Drastic policy reversal should be avoided, rather it should concentrate efforts in fine-tuning the existing policy measures; as well as ensuring that adequate credit facilities are channeled to those manufacturers who have viable business plans and are ready to invest within the domestic economy. This will go a long way at enhancing fund’s mobilization in the country for sustained manufacturing sector output growth.

Marketing Department, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

Abstract

The study examined feasibility study and marketing planning a panacea towards business stability in Nigeria. Stability of any business in Nigeria lies on proper planning before during and after commencement of the business, we should not shy away from the fact that most business in Nigeria pay little or no attention to feasibility and marketing planning, that is why a lot of business in Nigeria records low turnover and growth. Abstract:

There has been a raging debate on the relationship between trade openness and economic growth in the literature. Whilst most studies focused on aggregative data on trade openness, empirical probe on studies disaggregating trade openness into sectoral exports (agriculture, solid mineral, manufacturing and oil exports) is scarcely pursued. The objective of the study is to assess to what extent export earnings from agriculture, solid mineral, manufacturing and oil exports impacted on economic growth in Nigeria. The model was estimated using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to co-integration for the long-run analysis while an unrestricted error correction model (ECM) was relied upon to explore the contemporaneous dynamics. The data obtained from various issues of the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletins and annual reports covered the period 1986-2019. The study found that sectoral exports had a long-run relationship with economic growth in Nigeria as evidenced by the ECM. In the short run, the study found that economic growth had a negative and significant response to changes in solid mineral exports (0.02%) and manufacturing exports (0.06%) contrary to its 0.05% positive response to oil exports. The paper therefore recommends that policy makers in Nigeria may modify the quality of exports by switching from exports of agriculture, solid mineral raw materials and semi-manufactured goods to high valued-added goods so as to create demand for the products and generate more revenue to the government.

Abstract

Available empirical evidences point to the fact that there is apathetic literature in Nigerian Agricultural sector on relationship between working capital management and financial performance, this study therefore provide evidence to bridge this gap by focusing on the impact of working capital management and financial performance of quoted agro-allied firms in Nigeria. To achieve the objective, secondary data were collected from financial statements and analysed over ten (10) years from 2008 through 2017 for the five (5) firms in Agricultural sector giving rise to fifty (50) years financial data. The descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data specifically, mean, mode, standard deviation, minimum and maximum descriptive statistics were used with OLS regression model that permit inferential judgement. After passing the Multicollinearity and Heteroscedasticity tests, the hypotheses were tested at 5% significance level. Among the findings, the study reveals that account receivable period (used as one of the variables of working capital management) has a significant positive impact on the financial performance of quoted agricultural firms in Nigeria with the t-value of 2.49 and a p-value of 0.017; this implies that proper management of account receivable will lead to improvement in the financial performance of quoted agricultural companies in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that all measures leading to continous improvement of Account receivable period should be put in place and sustained so that a firm is not affected negatively from all activities of bad debtors

Abstract

The infrastructural deficit experienced in Nigeria has spanned over decades mainly caused by poor budgetary allocation as recurrent expenditure always exceeded the capital vis-a-vis debt services. As the country is aspiring for a sound, stable and sustainable globally competitive economy with a GDP of not less than $900 billion, the present administration issued Sukuk for the first time in 2017 as another option in funding that year’s budget specifically addressing the road infrastructural deficit in the country. The study, therefore, critically reviewed the modus operandi as well as the nexus between Sukuk and the budget. To achieve this, the paper carefully assessed the work of previous scholars using descriptive and content analysis of the documented texts and scholarly articles. The findings posit that there exists a synergy between Sukuk and budget as it addresses the developmental challenges in Nigeria which include critical road infrastructure that triggers globally competitive economy and contributes to foreign exchange earnings to the government and promising returns to its holders with minimum risk. The study, therefore, recommends more research on Sukuk to explore the appropriate shari’a rulings on issuance and full commitments on the part of government to ensure prompt payment of the rent accruing semi-annually to its holders in order to improve the public trust and foster confidence on part of the investors.
