One Research question and three Research hypotheses guided the study.  Survey research design was adopted for the purpose of the study. The population of the study comprised of all the students in the department of vocational education  at the Faculty of Education University of Maiduguri, Borno State. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 100 students which formed the population of the study. Instrument of the study is a questionnaire designed by the researcher’s, tagged Effect of Social Media on Student’s Academic Performance (ESMSAP). The instrument was divided into two sections. Section one comprises of the student demographic characteristics; such as (age and gender). While section two is on effects of social media on student academic performance. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage’s, were used to analyse the demographic data, while t-test and Pearson product moment correlations was used in testing the research hypotheses. Findings on the exposure of the respondents to social media revealed that all the respondents were exposed to social media. Results further showed that there was no significant gender difference in time spent on social media, and that time and age does not have significant effect on social media usage in relation to student academic performance in University of Maiduguri.  It was therefore concluded that social media participation was negatively related with students’ academic performance, while the other independent variables were positively related with students’ outcome.  It was further concluded that time and age does not have significant effect on social media usage in relation to student academic performance in University of Maiduguri. Based on the result of the findings it was therefore recommended that social media should be used for educational purposes as well; Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the undergraduate students’ academic performance.

Abstract

The study is aim at examining and investigating the influence of selected key human factors on academic performance of students in Delta state Polytechnic Otefe – Oghara. The statistical tool of multiple regression was employed to model the relationship between academic performance of students in terms of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as function of hours spent per week in reading, age of student, class attendance and feeding allowance. The data utilized in the study was collected using structured questionnaire that were distributed to students randomly selected from different Departments of the Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara  using SPSS 16.0. The fitted multiple regression model is specified as. The findings revealed that hours spent in reading per week, attendance to class and feeding allowance are statistically related/associated with academic performance while age do not. It was equally revealed that X1, X3 and X4 are statistically significant while X2 is not statistically significant at the given level. The coefficient of determination of of 55% suggest the model is fairly adequate which establish the fact that at least one of the independent variable is redundant.

Abstract

This paper investigated the effects of enhanced Conventional Lecture Method {Conventional Lecture Method + PowerPoint (ELM)} and Gender on Students’ Achievement in Basic Science. A pretest-posttest quasi experimental design was adopted. The sample consisted of 404 JSS II Students from six schools randomly selected in three Educational Zones in Oyo State. Three instruments used were-Teachers’ Instructional Guide for Enhanced Conventional Lecture Method, Teachers’ Instructional Guide for Conventional Lecture Method and Students’ Achievement Test (r=0.74). Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using ANCOVA and mean scores. Results showed that treatment had significant main effect on achievement {F (2,404) =206.18; p<.05; ᵑ2=.52}. Gender had significant main effect on achievement {F (1, 404) =3.98; p<.05}; ᵑ2=.01). There was no significant two-way interaction effect of treatment and gender on achievement (F (2, 404) =.741; p>.05; ᵑ2=.004). Enhanced Conventional Lecture Method is therefore, recommended to be adopted by Basic Science teachers and curriculum planners.

ABSTRACT

Field trips are ideal for increasing students’ experience and perceptions of various organisms and their relationship between the original habitats. However, in general field trips are greatly neglected by teachers and their exploring short-term effects are thought to be questionable. Therefore, we conducted a one-day field trip for both improving students’ knowledge in ecology and for examining short-term effects on attitude and knowledge in colleges of education in Kano. Based on the results of the research conducted 3 days after the trip, we found a significant and positive increase in students’ attitudes toward biology, natural environment outside and future career in biology. Moreover, students displayed a better understanding of ecology concepts like ecosystems and food webs. However, no similar pattern was observed for the control group experienced only traditional biology settings. Thus, this study is unique showing significant effects of a field trip on students’ attitude and knowledge toward biology.

Department of Integrated Science, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.

ABSTRACT

The study examined the impact of cooperative learning strategy on students’ academic performance in Basic Science in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. It also determined how moderating variables like sex and perception affect students performance in Basic Science when cooperative learning was used as an instructional strategy. The study adopted a quasi experimental pre-test post test non randomized control group design. The sample of the study included 40 students in the experimental group and 80 students in the control group. The 120 students were drawn randomly from a population of 1015 obtained from two schools, selected. Also, a validated questionnaire “students perception of cooperative learning (SPCL)” and test score (Pre-test; posts test) of the students in both groups were the instrument used in data collection. To guide the study three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. The mean, standard deviation and t-test were used to analyse the research questions while the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance level. The major findings of the study include: a significant higher performance score of students in cooperative learning strategy than those in the traditional lecture method, a non significant difference in achievement test score between male and female students in cooperative group, and a non significant difference in the perception of male students and the female students. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: cooperative learning strategy is a veritable tool toward enhancing students academic performance, teachers especially those in the field of science should therefore realistically adjust to the use of this technique in their classroom interaction with the students. Cooperative learning strategy brings about positive interpersonal relationship, higher academic performance as well as individual and group accountability among students. Therefore students should accept and increase their perception and participation in classroom activities, involving cooperative learning strategy. The government should make policies that will promote teachers choice of cooperative leaning strategy over other conventional methods of teaching. Curriculum planners should enshrine in the curriculum, the use of cooperative learning strategy in the teaching of some vital concept across various subjects and level of education. The general society should realize that through cooperative work and collaborative thinking we can proffer better solutions to the numerous human problems.
