Abstract

This research has discussed the major points in Christian theology that highlight the human dignity, and thus, the dignity of the women folk. The purpose of this research is to develop theological points for the evaluation of the issues that arise in the socio-economic and religio-cultural experience of women in Africa. This would bring us in contact with the teachings of the Church on human dignity and the Christian anthropology embedded in the Christian Scripture. Based on the evidence of Genesis, this work traced man’s inhumanity to the woman to the event of the fall of man. The research method employed was the hermeneutical method of inquiry.

ABSTRACT

Recently the power sector has undergone series of reforms and efforts are towards improving the situation in the generation of power despite the glaring corruption facing the power sector.  Much has been done but the progress has been very slow. The country’s energy needs is growing geometrically and the current energy production is obviously inadequate to encourage industrialization and foreign investors’ participation, thereby stunting national development. Despite safety concerns, this paper gives an overview of nuclear technology with respect to electricity generation, examines the current applications of nuclear technology in the country, explains the viability and reliability of nuclear power plants as an index in the Nigerian power sector for improving the nation’s energy production and supply to meet the energy needs for now and the future. The paper also highlights the environmental implications of nuclear power plants.

Department of Animal Science, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria

Abstract

The demand for meat and milk in Nigeria has doubled in the past two decades, and this trend is expected to continue in the following years. There is need to enhance productivity in the prevalent smallholder crop-animal systems, in order to sustainably match these increases in demand without jeopardizing the natural resource base especially in the face of the prevalent global climate changes. Some estimates suggest that available roughages may not be enough to sustain the actual livestock population, but better quality and high yielding improved forages and other nutritional options are needed to ensure more efficient use of available roughages. Current options for improving the efficiency of feeding systems in smallholder livestock farms include; appropriate budgeting of available feed resources, greater use of improved forages and persistent multipurpose legume option, supplementation of low quality feed resources and treatment of crop residues.

Abstract

This study was designed to assess access to waste water management services in Maiduguri. Questionnaires were administered to 381 households within Maiduguri metropolis using cluster sampling at ward level and systematic sampling within each ward. Interview was also conducted with key management staff of telecommunication subscribers. Descriptive statistics was utilised in analysing the collected data and was presented in tables. The analysis revealed that, the majority utilise mobile phones for call with 7% using both mobile phones and call centres. Only 13% utilise one subscriber line with 43% utlising two lines. The majority constituting 96%agree to have service interruption, with 74% experiencing it for 5hours and less per day. The majority, that is, 81% utilise 3G network for internet connection with mobile phones and 10% don’t have internet enabled phones. 16 of the wards returned have satisfactory levels of access to ICT which tallies with that of the entire town, but a major drawback is the consistent service interruptions which could cripple the activities of the town. It was therefore recommended that, service providers should boost their telecommunication masts and erect new ones in areas not under coverage or partial coverage for effective service provision. They should also see to the immediate and continuous rectification of all technical faults to mitigate service interruptions in the town

Abstract:

The problem of solid waste generation and management has assumed an alarming dimension in Nigeria. This paper tries to evaluate the effect of unmanaged solid waste on property values in a Nigerian City (Kaduna) based on the present method being adopted to manage the waste. The target population principally was made up of the tenants, landlords in Kakuri and firms of Practicing Estate Surveyors and Valuers in Kaduna. Stratified random sampling technique was used to pick the samples. In addition, three refuse dumps were selected for examination in order to know how their generation and management affect values of twenty properties selected within the axis of these dump sites. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study among other findings, discovered that waste dumps have significant negative effects on the values of the properties in the area as rent paid on properties adjoining dumpsites were low compared to similar properties located far away from dumpsites and property value rate became very low and unattractive as one approaches dumpsite. The paper recommended that government at all levels should establish functional Waste Management Authority and Waste Research Institutes with a goal to evolving techniques capable of turning wastes to wealth.

Abstract

Due to the advancements in computer hardware and software in recent years, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique has been a powerful and effective tool to comprehend the complex problem associated to cooling machine performance using various sinks with different structures and cooling fin numbers.  In this study, a sink of different number of fins with uniform mesh sizes were designed in order to determine their effect on cooling machine performance. Three different designs were carried out with 2mm mesh sizes using Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL). On each of the design, the numbers of cooling fins were varied from 13, 24 and 31 fins, and the best in cooling performance was determined. For the analysis of their performance, 11 different nodal temperature results were used. The nodal temperature numbers were constantly maintained throughout the simulation for consistency of the analysis, and by keeping the fin design constant on each cooling fin the nodal temperature results were obtained from every cooling sink. A constant dimension of 40cm2 of the structure was maintained throughout the simulation. An outstanding performance was achieved from a sink with 31 cooling fins structure; 2mm mesh size with an average nodal temperature of 296.82k followed by a sink with 24 cooling fins structure with an average temperature of 341.64K. Finally, cooling sink with 13 fins structure gives the highest average temperature of 359.50K. Therefore, based on the simulation, 31 fins cooling structure with 2mm mesh size is best for a machine due to its effectiveness in cooling performance compared to 13 and 24 fins structures.

1 Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna, Nigeria. 2 Department Surveying and Geoinformatics, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Nigeria.

Abstract

Spatial distributions can be used to assess sustainability of marine resources population in an ecosystem. Accurate descriptions of species relationship and spatial distributions are fundamental to understanding patterns of feeding and what they feed on.  However, spatial data for the vast majority of species are exceedingly rare, resulting in information about species distributions to be inadequate for many applications.  This study therefore used mapping parameters model to depict the spatial location of predation-prey relationship in terms of what they eat for marine resources sustainability. The spatial attributes data required for these spatial analyses were secondary data generated from literature. With the use of mapping parameters, ninety (90) key fish species were focused on and categorized into six sub-communities. A chi square goodness of fit test was conducted to determine whether the sample provides a spatial relationship between the different categories of fish species sub-community food web. The result revealed that, relationship exists among the various predation- prey fish species. The findings from this study would provide invaluable insights into species interactions as applicable to marine management for effective marine resources sustainability.

PARTNERSHIP FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS): THE NEED FOR A RESEARCH COMPONENT FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN NIGERIA[1]

HAKEEM OLATUNJI TIJANI, PHD

Political and Governance Policy Department, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Oyo Road, Ojo, Ibadan

Abstract

There has been eclectic collection of research on the Sustainable Development Goals, which seek advancement of accountability of the programmes. However, institutional stretching and a lack of coordinating and centralized Research House have limited some variant of accountability especially the diagonal accountability. The successful implementation of the SDGs is anchored on active participation of stakeholders especially the Civil Society. To address this research gap, this paper advocates for institutional strengthening that establishes the Research House, which oversees the coordination and the centralization of research on the SDGs. This is with a view to providing feedback mechanism between the beneficiaries and government. This is imperative if access to justice is to be heralded as encapsulated in Goal 16. The path dependence of political philosophy of some of the SDGs targets such as issue of justice necessitates modification of the institutions for the programme. The feedback mechanism provides the effectiveness of the implementation process, which makes the review of progress critical to the attainment of the SDGs. The corollary of this thesis is that the SDGs require new institutional direction to ensure efficient coordination and centralization of ideas on the SDGs. This would make the desiderata of The SDGs readily available to the Nigerian citizens. There is availability of institution designed to collate data on the SDGs, such is not institutionalized to vigorously explore research proper. The paper concludes that what would make a difference between success and failure of the implementation of the SDGs is the establishment of the Research House, which provides feedback mechanism through the Civil Society as a veritable partner in providing diagonal accountability for the programme. This paper makes use of secondary data collection and data were content analyzed

Department of Public Administration, Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, Ohaji

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the concept of rural development and assesses efforts made by various governments in Nigeria since 1960 towards the development of the rural areas. The paper states that development plans were employed as frameworks for co-coordinating these development strategies to improve the living condition of the rural dwellers by raising the state of infrastructure, to pave way for the building of cottage industries, MSMEs, etc. Paradoxically, however, the rural areas are still beset by poverty, disease, unemployment, and illiteracy, in spite of the huge resources and media hype that went with those programmes. The paper posits that these efforts have continued to remain a mirage owing to spoils politics, corruption, policy inconsistency and policy discontinuity. It concludes that a change in the citizens’ perception of politics is required to get things right and recommends among others, that good governance and purposeful leadership hold the key to reversing the trend.

Department of General and Remedial Studies, the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Yobe State.

ABSTRACT

The paper is entitle “the effect of nongovernmental organization towards internally displaced persons in Yobe state” Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yobe state have been suffering multitudes of humanitarian crises which due largely to the menace of insurgency in the region. The downtrodden consequences posed by the phenomena have subjected countless numbers of people to malaises of poverty, poor health, prevailing crises and outright misery. Responding to curb the menacing effects of the situation, Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have dearly come to the aid of the teaming populace. The study employed documentary analysis in generating data and has found that thousands of people are in object poverty hence manifestations of social problems like prostitution, theft, sexual transmitted diseases (STD), among others become obvious. The researcher therefore, recommended inter-alia the whole heart involvement of government in addressing the seemingly never-ending phenomena in addition to the concerted efforts by nongovernmental organizations.
