Abstract

This study examines the impact of corporate governance mechanisms on financial performance of listed banks in Nigeria; in post consolidation era. Tobin’s q was used as the dependent variable, while board size, board independence and ownership concentration as the independent variables. The study employed correlation research design, and the population comprise deposit money banks listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE). Secondary data was obtained from audited accounts of banks covering twelve-year period (2006-2017). The technique of data analysis used in this work is multiple regression. The findings of the study are that the three variables of interest to the research (board size, board independence and ownership concentration) are negatively related to the firm performance. It is, therefore, recommended that the banks should continue to keep their boards size manageable not minding pressure of inclusion from their consolidating constituent banks.  Banks are encouraged to maintain a highly diversified composition in their board structure for synergy effect while further research is recommended on the ownership concentration to enhance performance.

ABSTRACT

The poor performance of SMEs is a major source of concern. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) dominate Nigeria’s economy in agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, industry, and services. As a result, the aim of this research is to look into the impact of micro insurance and micro pension on the output of MSEs in Nigeria. A cross-sectional design was used in this analysis with a study population of 8,395 registered SMEs in Lagos State, which has the highest number of SMEs and accounts for 85 percent of Nigerian business operation. To ensure that every member of the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample, the researchers used a simple random sampling technique. The study’s minimum 146 sample size was determined using G-power software with a 0.15 effect size and two predictors. For data analysis and hypothesis testing. To analyze the collected data, this study used the statistical kit for statistical package for social science (SPSS) and the Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) SmartPLS 3.3.3. Micro insurance has a positive and important impact on MSE performance, while micro pension has a negative effect on MSE performance, according to the findings of the report. As a result, it was concluded that in order to enhance the efficiency of SMEs, SMEs owners must be aware of micro insurance for successful SMEs performance, as micro pension was found to have a negative impact on SMEs performance.

Abstract

A growing and sustainable economy is the goal of every nation. Nigeria was considerably described as an agrarian economy during the first decade after independence. However, the discovery of crude oil and the huge inflow of foreign exchange revenues that accompanied the oil boom diverted the attention of the people and government. This led to dwindling of the average annual growth rate of agricultural exports by 17% overtime. By 1996, agriculture accounted for only 2% of exports. The study adopted ex-post facto research design. The study employed 155 observations using 37 years of economic data sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, Nigeria Bureau of Statistics and World Governance Indicator from 1981-2017. The results revealed that agricultural exports had a significant effect on economic growth of Nigeria (Adj R2 =0.998; F(5, 155) = 4114.96; p<0.05). The study concluded that agricultural exports impacted the economic growth of Nigeria. The study recommended that an effective and committed policy implementation by the government is needed to improve economic growth. Furthermore, the Nigerian government should provide additional funding for the agricultural sector to raise its productivity and increase its contributions to economic growth.

Abstract

There are various theoretical and empirical studies that have been conducted on foreign direct investment (FDI). This paper reviewed the literature on the determinants of FDI in developing countries. These countries are characterized by low per capita income, high unemployment rate, dependence on primary sector and dependence on exports of primary commodities. A systematic review was carried out to gather information. Empirical findings across the developing countries identified the main determinants of FDI which include market size, larger per capita GDP, higher GDP growth rate, high proportion of international trade, business-friendly environment, natural resources, stock market performance, infrastructure and degree of openness. Thus, the economic environment in these countries has significant influence on the investment decision of Multinational Corporations (MNCs). Additional theoretical information on the FDI could guide new empirical studies. This is needed to shed more light on the determinants.

CURBING THE CRIME RATE IN NIGERIAN BANKING SECTOR: THE NEED FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

OKEKE RAPHAEL CHUKWUMA; & ORAFU EBERE BENEDETH

Department of Accountancy, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State.

ABSTRACT

This study appraises the relationship that exists between cyber security and audit committee effectiveness using audit committee independence, audit committee technological expertise and audit committee financial expertise characteristics as independent variables. The variable used to measure the dependent variable is cyber security compliance. 13 banks listed on the Nigerian stock exchange were selected. Empirical analysis was carried out using product moment correlation and ordinary least square regression analysis methods. The result showed that audit committee characteristics as measure by independence, financial expertise and technological expertise all have non-significant negative relationship to cyber security in the Nigerian banking sector. The implication is that, the audit committee as presently constituted in Nigeria would be unable to provide controls and oversight functions over cyber security in the banking sector which is the most sensitive sector in the economy. It was therefore recommended that the composition of the audit committee in Nigeria should be worked on to deliberately incorporate needed technological and financial experts that can ask probing questions and offer their wealth of experience in safeguarding the shareholders wealth and lastly, the committee members should be seen to be independent.

UTILIZING KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AS A STRATEGY FOR PROVIDING SATISFACTORY SERVICES IN BUSINESS ORGANSATIONS

HADIZA DAUDA

Department of Business Education Management, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola

Abstract

Business organisations are faced with the task of promoting customer satisfaction and loyalty through provision of quality service. The customers’ demands are constantly evolving especially in service organizations and it takes a pragmatic approach to be able to satisfy these wants. Delivering quality service strongly depends on the ability to acquire, develop, accumulate and distribute knowledge asset among employees. Therefore, knowledge management is one of the strongest strategies by which commercial companies can improve their service quality by enhancing employees’ knowledge about customer’s preferences and providing corresponding services. The aim of this paper is to undertake an empirical review and discuss how implementation of knowledge management strategy by business establishments such as banks, agro-allied companies, hotels and restaurants can contribute to quality improvement and competitive advantage. The team of employees that is capable of coping with different customers’ preferences is that which is motivated and trained to acquire and share knowledge. Therefore, proprietors and managers of business organizations should provide information infrastructure to allow information gathering and sharing. Establishing interactive forum at both individual company and industry levels where customers’ complaints and suggestions are discussed can help achieve this objective.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: EVIDENCE FROM THE NIGERIAN COMMERCIAL BANK AND MTN NIGERIA

OBIMMA JOLET ADANMA

Department of Business Administration and Management, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) has been a highly cotemporary and contextual issue to all stakeholders including the government, the corporate organization itself, and the general public. The public contended that the payment of taxes and the fulfilment of other civic rights are enough grounds to have the liberty to take back from the society in terms of CSR undertaken by other stakeholders. Most corporate organizations are concerned about what they can take out of the society, and de-emphasized the need to give back to the society (their host communities). This attitude often renders the entire community uninhabitable. However, the general belief is that both business and the economy and the society gain when firms actively strive to be socially responsible; that is, the business organizations gain in enhanced reputation, while economy and society gains from the social projects executed by the business organization. This study is therefore, intended to consider the imperative and benefits of CSR on the Nigeria economic development. The perceived gap supposedly created is harnessed and investigated for possible resolution, using the banking and communication industries as a case study. The research approach is both descriptive and analytical. Data collected for this study are from both primary and secondary sources, relying heavily on the relevant information available from both banking and communication sectors, and other sources. Tests were conducted using both regression and correlation analysis. The regression result reveals a strong and significant relationship between CSR and Societal Progress such that the relationship between CSR and Societal Progress is statistically significant. It is thus concluded that CSR plays a significant role in Societal Progressiveness in terms of environmental and economic growth. The study recommends that, while improvement in the depth of participation by banking and telecommunication industries in economic and environmental development is desirable, they are encouraged to close ranks and forge common interest in addressing certain social responsibilities, especially those bothering on security and technological advancement of the polity.

INADEQUATE DISCRIMINATION LAWS: TOOLS THAT FOSTER GENDER HIERARCHY IN NIGERIA.

AMARACHI KELECHI NDIFE

Department of Business Administration and Management, Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

ABSTRACT

Gender hierarchy is manifest in the primary institutions that exist in Nigerian society. The Constitution of Federation of Nigeria, 1999 made provision against discrimination of citizens in Nigeria but the provision has not obliterated gender hierarchy that exists in Nigeria. Other sources of law in Nigeria excluding the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria have no express provision that prohibits the discrimination of persons on the basis of sex and this encourages gender hierarchy. This study examines the insufficiency of Nigerian discrimination laws as fostering tools for gender hierarchy. Nigerian society is patriarchal and it accords different roles to different genders. The roles assigned are discriminatory, in spite of that, individuals are expected to accustom to the roles assigned to them. This study is concerned with revealing the gender hierarchy that is prevalent in the primary institutions in Nigeria which is being promoted by inadequate discrimination laws. This paper examines the insufficiency of discrimination laws in Nigeria. Gender hierarchy in Nigeria and discriminatory policies in Nigeria reveal the restraints in promotion of human rights in Nigeria. This work will be relevant to the law makers in Nigeria in reviewing the few existing laws on discrimination and identifying the loopholes in them. It will be crucial in making specific laws that will obliterate the existence of gender inequality in Nigeria. It will build on extant knowledge on the effect of insufficient legislations on gender inequality.

DOES RULE OF LAW AFFECT ECONOMIC GROWTH POSITIVELY?

ANYAEHIE JULIET CHIZOBA

Department Of Business Administration, Federal Polytechnic Oko

ABSTRACT

Efficient institutional structure resolves the uncertainties in the market and the problem of asymmetric information, and thus creates a positive erogeneity, ensures the efficient distribution of the resources and makes a positive impact on the functioning of the economy. In addition to this, especially rule of law forms the basis of the socio-economic development. In the presence of the factors such as prevention of corruption and freedom of expression, institutional structure has a significant impact on economic growth. However, there are empirical studies that state that institutional efficiency boosts economic growth in developed countries, whereas it doesn’t have an impact or has a negative impact on economic growth in developing countries. For all these reasons, the impact of institutional efficiency on economic growth in developed, developing and underdeveloped countries will be analyzed in this study. In this study, the effect of institutional effectiveness on economic growth has been analyzed in both three country groups from 2002 to 2015 by using GMM. Dependent variable is GDP and the independent variables are institutional variables (rule of law, fight against corruption, voice and accountability). Based on our primitive findings we expect that developed institutions effect economic growth positively in develop countries unlike developing countries.

Abstract

This research work focuses on empirical testing of Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) on 30 stocks of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), using the All Share Index as proxy for the market index and the government Treasury bills rate as the risk-free interest rate. The first and second pass regression methodology was applied on monthly data for a period of 5 years from January, 2014 to December, 2018. The study revealed that the slope (beta) of Security Market Line (SML) does not correspond to the market excess return and so the intercept (alpha) is not equal to the risk-free rate over the period. The t-statistics for both the intercept and slope are not statistically different from zero.  Therefore, we conclude that the results did not support the CAPM standard theory in the selected study period,
