Department of Banking and Finance, University of Jos, Jos, Plateau State – Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Islamic finance presents a new avenue as a novel alternative to the conventional financial set-up in this country. The purpose of this study is to assess the patronage behaviour of Nigerians towards Islamic banking. The objectives of this study have been met by conducting a survey to elicit the responses from retail customers of both Islamic and non-Islamic banks in the city of Kaduna, North Western Nigeria. The survey was carried out among both Muslims and non-Muslims to find out about the awareness levels, patronage, motivation and perception towards Islamic banking in Nigeria while discriminant analysis was used in studying the difference between the demographic variables of the respondents and perceptions of male and female with regard to the general perception and awareness of Islamic banking and difference between those who practice Islamic methods of finance and those who do not with regard to the general perceptions, awareness and patronage towards Islamic banking. Results indicated that Islamic banking is having low level of awareness among the respondents. However, the attitude towards adoption of Islamic Banking seems encouraging, as reflected in the study. The future directions for this research could be carried out by drawing a cluster across the rest of the country. This may help to understand and get a better and broader perspective of the need for Islamic banking and hence, its prospects in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT
Queue management provide a firm with a competitive edge in the marketplace, and a good number of customers of most banks continue to complain about the time they spend in the banking hall either to save, withdraw or transact any other official banking services and which affect the bank’s performance. The main objective of this study is assess queuing management system on bank’s performance. The study employed the cross-sectional survey research design using in which questionnaires were administered to the customers of Polaris Bank Plc, Bauchi Branch. A sample size of 338 customers of Polaris Bank Plc was determined from the population of the study using Krejcie and Morgan. The questionnaire was validated using face and content validity approach by expert in the academics and in the banking industry. The validated questionnaire was then administered to the respondents by the researcher using the simple random sampling technique. Out of the 338 questionnaires that were administered, 231(68.3%) were retrieved back and found fit for analysis. The data collected were coded and cleaned using SPSS and analysed using frequencies and percentage, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study revealed that customer waiting time has a negative effect on bank performance, while customer satisfaction, bank’s promotional activities, and service quality have statistically significant positive impact on bank’s performance. It was therefore recommended that the management of banks should employ more banking staff and train existing bank managers and employees so that the customers will be attended to on time thereby reducing customers waiting time for better bank performance and they should also make provision for banking facilities and train its staff on the general understanding of concepts, current technology, and applications of queuing theory as it relates to customer satisfaction and waiting time.

Abstract
This paper examines the impact of labour migration-mobility related provisions and unemployment as it affects the African continent and African Union rules on the free movement of workers. Considering the fact that the vision of a united Africa has been part and parcel of the pan-African narrative for decades, it systematically addresses Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community Relating to the Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment as contained in AU Free Movement Protocol adopted in 2018. The paper gives a particular focus on the youth of Africa and the unemployment question, social cohesion and political instability. The paper further poses the following two questions. First, does intra-African Union labour migration correlate with employment/unemployment rates in host or home member states during periods of unsettled growth? Second, how have member states reacted in terms of restricting or allowing access to their labour markets by African Union workers during the transitional periods? The discourse concludes on the premise that some groups, such as young immigrants, women or older immigrants have greater difficulties in finding jobs.

Abstract
Women in different nations play equal roles with their men counterparts in economic development through entrepreneurship. The contribution of women to the development of any nation through entrepreneurial activities cannot be overemphasized. A sample of 197 respondents were derived from the population of 390 women entrepreneurs in Abeokuta South Local Government of Ogun State using simple random sampling techniques. One hundred and fifty-two (152) questionnaires were filled and returned. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as regression analysis to test the hypothesis. The results showed that there was a close relationship between market share and business profitability at R =0.104, p-value< 0.01. Also hypothesis two tested showed that human resource has a positive significant relationship on sales revenue as P value (0.000) is less than 0.05. Thus, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative was accepted. The study concluded that if gender issues are properly taken care of, women will be motivated to go into any line of business or trade. Unemployed women entrepreneurs should be financed and encouraged to occupy areas like agriculture, services and mining. Furthermore, the study also recommended that women entrepreneurs should be encouraged to be involved in creative work and government should ensure the provision and formulation of an economic policy that will favour the business environment.

Abstract
The stunning fall in oil prices and the recent slowdown in Nigeria’s economic growth have heightened the calls for sustainable economic development through Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as an alternative source of investment financing. Unfortunately, the growth effect of FDI in Nigeria has not been sustained as a result of genuinely rooting issues. China has been the second largest recipient of FDI behind India and the most efficient user of FDI in the world which subsequently spurred their growth immeasurably. The need for Nigeria to observe and follow China’s FDI growth pattern becomes pertinent to achieving the desired industrial output growth across all sectors. In examining the underlying ideologies, this paper employed the classical linear regression model (OLS) and found that within the observed period, FDI impacted negatively on industrial output growth in Nigeria. The undesirable relationship between FDI and industrial output growth can be manipulated to benefits if the country makes a significant effort in increasing the FDI inflows into major sectors that have forward and backward linkages. Based on the findings, it recommends that policy reforms should be enacted by the government to ensure proper functioning of the market’s systems such that well-targeted driven foreign investors can be attracted. The government should do more on issues of security and the ease of doing business such that the lost investor’s confidence can be regained.

Abstract
The potentials of financial sector in both developed and developing nations is a crucial sector in evolving and enhancing of major contributing sector to economic growth and the well-being of the people in the light of industrialization, manufacturing, services, agriculture, among others. Despite Nigeria taking lead in almost all the major food and cash crop production in the whole world that numerous products can be extracted from crops by this way Nigeria can feed her growing population and boost her export, this would translate to diversifying the economy by mean of creating alternative sources of income earnings. Hence, the study employed error correction mechanism to examine the role played by the financial sector to the industrial performance in particular the agro-allied industry. Secondary time series data were used and series of tests were performed using E-veiw econometric package. The stability of the data after the diagnoses test revealed that agricultural output has direct relationship with the growth of agro-allied industries which is in line with the a priori expectation that most of the needed raw materials are supplied as the output from agriculture. Consequently, credit finance also recorded positive relationship. Therefore, the findings suggest that credit finance and supporting scheme to agro-enterprise is most pertinent in the development of the sector not forgetting the key role of agriculture in this race.

The achievement of sustainable economic growth in furtherance of economic development is the major aim of policy makers in various countries as this affects positively on the citizenry. This paper examined the impact of the changes in the macroeconomic factors on the productivity of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria from 1986 to 2015. Secondary data was extracted from the Central Bank of Nigeria 2015 Statistical Bulletin on the various variables of interest which included Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment rate, inflation rate, exchange rate, interest rate and manufacturing output. A preliminary evaluation of the data was conducted using both descriptive statistics and stationarity evaluation. The test indicated that all the variables are not normal. The occurrence of mixed order integration at level and first difference necessitated the deployment of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique as the estimation tool. The Generalized least Squares regression was deployed based on the result of the Hausman test which pointed to the direction of long-run connection amongst the variables. The follow-up check of short-run error correction mechanism discovered a 45 present disequilibrium adjustment. The result findings revealed that inflation and exchange rate contributed positively to manufacturing output in the long run. The influence of the rates of interest rate and unemployment were also positive in the short run but had negative impact in the long run. Also, the relationship between manufacturing output and GDP was positively and significant at 1 percent level. The results showed that manufacturing was a veritable engine of economic growth. In order to check the validity and robustness of the estimation model, the Ramsey RESET test; Cross dependence test; Autocorrelation test and Heteroscedasticity tests were conducted. The tests showed no presence of serial correlation but of heteroscedasticity which although makes the model inefficient but estimator is still unbiased. The study recommended the harmonization of both fiscal and monetary policies for the attainment of macroeconomic stability.

Abstract
Banking sector performs a pivotal role in capital formation, which is essential for the economic development of a country. However, the sector in Nigeria have been experiencing cut-throat competition from both local and multinational banks. This has necessitated the adoption of various strategies such as outsourcing to increase their efficiency and remain competitive. This study therefore investigates the effect of strategic outsourcing on the performance of Nigerian banks with specific reference to the selected banks in Osogbo metropolis. Specifically, the study determines the extent of strategic outsourcing by Nigerian banks, examines the effect of strategic outsourcing on deposit mobilization of Nigerian banks, examines the effect of strategic outsourcing on bank’s profitability in Nigerian banks and identifies the challenges of outsourcing strategy faced by Nigerian banks. Survey research design was adopted in the study among 100 staff members of selected banks in Osogbo metropolis, Osun State. Data analysis was performed with the aid of simple percentage, mean and Ordinary Least Square (OLS). Result reveals that security services, catering services, advertising and marketing, recruitment services and training of employee services are fully sourced by Nigerian banks. Result further reveals that strategic outsourcing has significant effect on deposit mobilization (F = 139.254; β = 0.766; t = 11.801; P < 0.005) and banks’ profit level (F = 49.776; β = 0.580; t = 7.055; P < 0.005) respectively. Result also indicates that risk of exposing confidential data, fear of losing management control, security risks, inability to develop clear objectives, share financial burdens, reduce quality control, company’s attachment to its brand and processes and lack of top management support are the major challenges confronting the implementation of strategic outsourcing in Nigerian banks. Subsequently, the study recommends that management should use outsourcing as a strategic tool to free up the company’s resources so as to focus on its core competencies and banks that outsource should continue to monitor the contractor’s activities and establish constant communication.

ABSTRACT
The paper examines the youth a catalyst for entrepreneurial development in Nigeria by considering what need to be done in Nigeria to provide youth with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs and leaders in their various communities. So that social economic and political upheavals which have often stunted the growth and development of Nigeria can be things of the past. The youth should be encouraged into assuming position of authority and leadership because there is nothing that can surpass the effectiveness of an on the job training. often times those in leadership authorities do not see youth as qualified to take challenging roles whether in or out of government by so doing, there is needs to be constant reaching out to young people and as involvement in whatever concerns then. The government, its agencies, nongovernmental organizations and corporate institutions should be seen as showing interest in the affairs of the youth. Policies that will incorporate the youth as partners in progress should always be initiated adopted and supported. There should be a continuous inflow of ideas between these bodies and the youth. These could be done by involving the youth in corporate workshops, seminars lectures, road shows, training etc.

Abstract
This study was aimed at using multiple regression technique to analyze the effect of oil price on the Nigerian macroeconomic variables from 1990 to 2017. In a bid to achieve the objectives of this study, five null and alternative hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The statistical technique discussed in this study was used to justify the hypotheses. The diagnostic tests showed that there is no presence of multicollinearity symptoms among the explanatory variables and there is no presence of serial correlation in the residuals. The result from the diagnostic tests also showed that heteroscedasticity does not exist in the data, and the error term is normally distributed. The empirical results emanating from the analysis indicated that Nigerian macroeconomic variables (inflation rate, exchange rate, RGDP, unemployment rate, interest rate) jointly have significant effect on the oil price during the year under study. Testing if international oil price has effect on each of the Nigerian macroeconomic variables revealed that exchange rate and interest rate have significant but inverse effect on oil price, while inflation rate and RGDP have no significant effect on oil price. Again, only unemployment rate has a direct significant effect on oil price. The coefficient of determination (R2), which indicates the proportion in oil price that is explained by Nigerian macroeconomic variables turned out with a percentage of 82.9% showing that there is a strong relationship between the international oil price variable and the Nigerian macroeconomic variables. This result entails that 82.9% (percent) variation in the value of international oil price is explained by a change in the macroeconomic variables.

ABSTRACT
Language and identity has become an issue that cannot be over-emphasized in a social milieu that is dotted by people of diverse cultures. This study therefore investigated entrepreneurship and creative branding with respect to some business names and slogans, especially cosmetic products. The need to be different and unique becomes paramount in the world market where survival strategy is the hallmark of every business enterprise, more so the upcoming small-scale businesses owned by individuals and groups. Sixty Cosmetic products were used. They were drawn from 210 recommendations by a class of 300 level undergraduates studying English, 42 in number, purposively selected in Ekiti State University, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education (EACOED), Oyo affiliate. A self-designed questionnaire was used, an aspect being a close type and the other being an open ended type in the collection of data. The grammatical category of the brand names/slogans was focused and this constituted the data for the study. Qualitative assessment was adopted through simple percentage. The study relied on theories of entrepreneurship and systemic functional grammar with a view to establishing the relationship between the concept and branding, using descriptive analysis. It was discovered that apart from the pragmatic essence of branding, the use of nominal and epithet (at the phrasal level) for affectivity dominated linguistic forms in cosmetics advertising. The study then concluded that the varied branding system and the slogans constituted a viable field of exploration in discourse pragmatics and recommended that more attention should be given to other areas of entrepreneurship as a field of social practice for language enrichment and for negotiating peace through affective deictic choices.

ABSTRACT
One of the indicators of development of a Country is the extent of its development at grassroots. Against this backdrop, this paper examined the performance of local government financing sources in the three Area Councils (Abaji, Bwari and Gwagwalada) of the FCT, Abuja. Specifically, it examined the level(s) of contribution of the available sources of finance. The study used both primary and secondary data, and is anchored on the theory of revenues exaction. It adopted a survey design method with its primary data obtained by the use of structured questionnaire and field observation. The secondary data was obtained from the records of the selected Area councils (2009-2013), books, official gazettes and periodicals among others. The primary data was analyzed with the help of Ms Excel and SPSS software; Kruskal-Wallis H-test statistics was employed in testing the hypothesis. The study reveals that there was low contribution of internal sources of financing, poor accounting records and the non-viability and enforceability of some revenue sources resulting in over reliance on external sources. To this end, the study recommends for intensive approach towards exploring more internal revenue sources via diversification of the local economy/revenue base away from oil exports, and extant disciplinary measures be enforced strictly to stamp out indiscipline. Furthermore, local government’s financial autonomy should be ensured in order to avoid unnecessary interference by higher tiers. Appropriate forum be formed to involve all stake holders in the plan process of the rural development projects.
