ABSTRACT

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not new; discussion about it began since the 1950s and has since continued to grow in importance and significance. It has been subjected to a lot debate, comment, and research. In spite of the seeming endless discussion about it, it has seen a lot of development in both academic and practitioner communities all over the world. This study examines the correlation between CSR and the quality of financial reports according to Stakeholder Theory of 21 Money Deposit Banks in Nigeria for the period 2010-2017. The empirical results of the overall samples indicated that by practicing CSR, companies can effectively reduce their level of earnings management, providing quality financial reports. The cluster sampling results show that CSR has a mediating effect, reducing the direct effects of corporate governance board structures on the quality of financial reports. This study considers the emergence of Stakeholder Theory compensates for the defects and deficiencies of agency theory in explaining the behaviors of managers. This study offers deeper insights to policy makers and investors to understand the association between company CSR performance and their financial reporting quality. The results suggest that company stakeholders should pay more attention when considering the influence of company CSR investment performance.

PROF. KANU IKECHUKWU ANTHONY, O.S.A.

Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State

Abstract

In this piece focussed on the contribution that Augustine’s African background, that is, his Afro-cosmo-vision of reality, made to the development of his philosophy of education. This piece is very important, first, because we have found ourselves at a time when some scholars, against evident historical evidence, argue that Saint Augustine is not an African. Second, we have also found ourselves at a time when many scholars believe that nothing good can come from Africa. This piece would, therefore, serve as a pointer to the Africanity of Augustine and the Africanness of his philosophy and theology. The hermeneutic method of inquiry would be employed.

ABSTRACT

One of the main objectives of the United Nations is to moderate and engage the vital interests of the super powers and the concerns for the survival of the weaker nations. The main thrust of this paper is to highlight the challenges of the United Nations in arms control and preventive diplomacy in the world. The research problematic, which has motivated the study, is the fact that in spite of the instrumentalities put in place by the UN in its quest for arms control and its desire to prevent conflicts in the world the proliferation of arms in many countries of the world have persisted armed conflicts and thereby endangering world peace and instability. The paper has used secondary sources as instrument of data collection for the study. The theoretical framework of the study hinges on Hammarskjold theory of preventive diplomacy which places emphasis on the idea of nations and governments dealing with each other on, an administrative level aided by diplomats who specializes in political negotiation. The paper has revealed that in spite of efforts by nation states to invoke the spirit of preventive diplomacy in resolving conflicts in the world, the measures have continued, unabated due to increasing cases of Islamic fundamentalism and rivalry between the west, east and dictatorial regimes like North Korea. The study has revealed that religious fundamentalism operate with the usual diplomatic channels where there are no state boundaries and diplomats who are skilled in the acts of negotiation as such the theory of preventive diplomacy can hardly succeed when dealing with faceless organization that operate under cover.

ABSTRACT

The transition from Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals: Wither Nigeria! Seeks to evaluate the scorecards of the Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria, as a basis to determine the preparedness of the country for greater challenges packaged in the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (the eradication of poverty, zero tolerance of hunger, promotion of good health and wellbeing, highly qualitative education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production climate actions, life below water, life in land, peace, justice and strong institution and partnership for the goals achievable by the 2030). The study adopted Desk Review Method because of the documentary nature of the data required. It was discovered that the pandemic nature of poverty and corruption in Nigeria, has led to the apparent failure of the Nigerian government in measuring up on the highly desirous, but limited eight Millennium Development Goals, two of which were attained. It was also discovered that funds for the developmental goals were often misappropriated, coupled with the failure of the donor states and agencies to adequately monitor the judicious use of the funds. Not to mention the lack of adequate commitment among the wealthy nations in the actualization of the Millennium Development Goals, especially in “Emission Cut” – a cardinal key to the actualization of the environmental sustainability (Goal Seven). It was also discovered that the International Financial institutions have used the opportunity of the MDGs to force neoliberal ideologies on the throat of the Less Developed Countries, while neglecting mis-governance as the bane of their development. Moreover, it was also discovered that the dispensation of the donor funds has been riddled with the politics of alliance, where the wealthy nations would rather release funds to middle-income countries, at the detriment of the poor and needy countries. The paper drawing on dependency theory, concluded that developmental efforts will always be futile when not indigenously initiated, while recommending global disarmament as the ultimate ingredient for global development

NIGERIAN ENGLISH: A VARIETY WITHOUT A STANDARD

ODEKUNBI, SUNDAY KEHINDE,

Department of English, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo,  Lanlate Campus, Lanlate.

Abstract

English is used as a second language in Nigeria and unarguably, it is expected to be influenced by the Nigerian indigenous languages for Nigerians to adequately use it to express their socio-cultural and political experiences. Thus, its nativization and indigenization is inevitable. However, this is expected to be done within the ambit of the rules considered grammatical by the world standard. This paper, therefore, working on the data collected from 600 students of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Lanlate Campus, reveals that Nigerian English is characterized by violation of grammatical rules, damaging of structures and distortion of meanings. It therefore concludes that efforts should be made by the eminent linguists in Nigeria to codify Nigerian English so as to be able to sift the incorrect usages from the correct ones. This will accord it (NE) international recognition and its Nigerian users will be saved from embarrassment in the midst of international speakers.
