Abstract

The paper examines the impact of the inter-agency collaboration on internal security in Nigeria. The recent nature of the wrangling and the attendant colossal loss of lives and materials have given the nation and the leadership of the security agencies a lot of concern in recent times. To provide a good theoretical foundation for this paper, insights are drawn from Margret Archor’s culture and Agency theory and Vold’s Group conflict theory. Relying on both primary and secondary sources of information, the paper finds that poverty, neglect, corruption and lawlessness are responsible for inter-agency wrangling in Nigeria.. The paper also finds that the failure of the operatives to address some of the lack of synergy between these security agencies accounts for alienation that often results to violent clashes. The paper recommended that the synergy among the inter-agency operatives should be strengthened.

DE L’ANTICOLONIALISME À LA CRÉOLISATION: LES ÉCRIVAINS POSTCOLONIAUX DES ANTILLES FRANÇAISES

IJAH GIDEON AKASE (PhD)

Department of French, Nasarawa State University, Keffi

Résumé

Abstract

REGIONAL INTEGRATION IN CONTEMPORARY AFRICA

’BIMBO OGUNBANJO

[Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria]. Department of Politics and International Relations, ISM – Adonai University, Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

Abstract

It is often said that regional integration would bring greater strength and bargaining power to African countries. But as this paper shows, progress in this area has been relatively limited, and Africa is still one of the most expensive places in the world to do business. The objective of this paper is to discuss the social, economic and political factors that explain the gap between regional integration as an institutional project (regionalism) and regional integration as an everyday reality (regionalization). After a short discussion on the scales and nature of integration, the second part of the paper reviews the literature and discusses the historical roots and contemporary activities of the institutions created to promote regional integration on the continent. The third part discusses the policy implications of the limited achievements of regional integration institutions, while the conclusion stresses the need for an African model of integration.

BOLANLE OLUBUSAYO FASAANU & HELEN ODUNOLA ADEKOYA, Ph.D

Department of Mass Communication, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State.

ABSTRACT

This paper is a review on existing studies in area of incidence, knowledge and adoption of cervical cancer prevention messages. In the course of critical review, studies show that cancer in most cases lead to death and the second most frequent malignancy is cervical cancer which is associated with women of child bearing age. The developed countries are treating cervical cancer via technology, medical and clinical care and getting concrete result but not the case with developing country like Nigeria. Media sensitization is key as a solution to address lack of awareness and effective prevention methods, late detection and paucity of treatment programmes which are notable problems encountered in the developing world. This study adopts library research method with the aid of secondary data sourced from relevant Journal, Conference proceedings, Textbooks, and National dailies to mention few. The paper concluded that health communication is desirable; because understanding of cervical cancer risk factors, infection as well as the possible result of late discovery and treatment is generally low among Nigerian women. Suggestively, mass media should be properly harnessed persuasively; for health campaign and promotion to create positive behavioral change among women. This will thereby curb the death threatening cervical cancer at its alarming rate.

*Department of Economics and Development Studies, Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria. **School of General Studies, Economics Program, Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, Bauchi State, Nigeria.

Abstract:

The study is on the analysis of the effects of corruption and electricity access on economic growth in Nigeria covering 2002Q1 to 2018Q4 time series data. The unit root properties of the series were tested using Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF), Philips Perron (PP) and Zivot-Andrews breakpoint unit root test. Chow test revealed presence of structural break in 2015 which was taken care of by the introduction of dummy variables and interaction terms. The results from Autoregressive Distributed lag (ARDL) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) cointegrating regression revealed that control of corruption and access to electricity have positive and statistically significant long run effects on economic growth in Nigeria, but the short run ARDL results indicated that electricity access and corruption control harm economic growth in Nigeria over the study period, with slow speed of adjustment to long run equilibrium of 2.63% quarterly. This study concludes that corruption is sand in the wheels of Nigeria’s economic prosperity and therefore recommends continued effort in control of corruption and increase in electricity supply for more economic growth among others.

TOUR OPERATORS AND TRAVEL AGENT BEST PRACTICE

OKUNOLA ADAFIN .A. OLAIYA

Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Faculty of Envirionment Design and Management, Lead City University Ibadan, Oyo State

ABSTRACT

Best practice is now widely accepted and promoted in manufacturing industry as a means of achieving quality management. When linked to environmental performance, the broader concept of best practice environmental management is of direct relevance to tourism. There is growing evidence that the tourism industry is prepared to foster environmental excellence through the adoption of best practice environmental management, and the implementation of self-regulatory auditing procedures to monitor compliance with environmental standards. This trend, which is strongest at the international corporate level of the tourism industry, is being reflected in the ‘greening’ of major elements of Australian tourism. The challenge is to raise concern for the environment among the many smaller, disparate tourism operations, and to promote best practice environmental management at all levels of the tourism industry.

The findings indicated that the involvement of traditional actors emerges as a result of the ineffectiveness of the formal security to protect lives and properties of citizens in Nigeria. However, frustration, corruption, lack of man power in security and public agitation are among the major factors that lead to the involvement of traditional actors in security administration. The challenges of security in fighting conflict ranges from lack of logistics, manpower shortage, and lack of new strategies that can be used by the security in combating with conflict in Nigeria. *Corporate Affairs and Informotion (CAI) Department, National Productivity Centre, Lagos State Office **Consultancy and Business Development (CBD) Department, National Productivity Centre, Lagos State Office

ABSTRACT:

This paper examines the cost of transacting with commercial banks and the cost of a large scale adoption of Bitcoins in Nigeria to provide a comparative analysis as to which medium of transaction best promotes industrialization in Nigeria. The direct costs of transacting with both mediums were estimated and compared for the years 2015 and 2016 while the indirect costs were outlined. A counterfactual estimation was also conducted to calculate the total cost of using Bitcoins for all financial transactions in Nigeria for the study period. The findings suggest that Bitcoin transactions are relatively cheaper and as such should provide a better platform for promoting industrialization in Nigeria. However, the non-accounting costs of transacting with both mediums potentially provide alternative conclusions. We recommend further studies on the non-accounting costs of transacting with Bitcoins.
