Abstract

Flood is a natural hazard, like drought and desertification, which occurs as an extreme hydrological event. This research assessed flood risk in Katsina-Ala area of Benue state using Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS). Both Primary and Secondary Sources of data were used for the study. Analysis of the total annual rainfall indicates that there is positive correlation in the analysis which is statistically significant at 0.5. Secondly, there is upward trend in seventeen years out of thirty five years and eighteen years downwards trend in the analysis of rainfall trend which indicates that as the year’s progress, there is possibility that there will be increase in rainfall, which shows the common characteristics of rainfall pattern in Katsina-Ala local government. The analysis of the floodplain dwellers shows that there is stability in the population of dwellers as many of them have stayed in the area for a considerable number of years. The population was aware that the area they live in is located close to the riverine area and therefore prone to flooding. The populations in the area are so attached to the area due to its fertile nature therefore unwilling to relocate The result from the questionnaire shows that the population have idea of the cause of flooding in the area as a result of heavy downpour and river overflowing its bank. Also, flood victims suffered as a result flooding in the area which leads to loss of properties, livestock and farmlands with some amounting to as much as ₦200,000. Houses and drainage systems were damages as a result of flooding. Women and children were most affected as a result of flooding. Benue State government should set up a GIS implementation and strategy unit under the Ministry of Lands and Survey tasked with the following responsibilities: Provision Building Codes, Monitoring of activities along the river banks, Emergency response measure and Supervision of buildings.

Abstract

The construction industry is normally complex and the Nigerian construction industry is further made complex due to its challenges as a developing nation. The industry requires lots of personnel, professionals, employees, contractors, clients, consultants and all to succeed. To effectively coordinate this team communication is a vital tool for the exchange of messages using different channels or medium. Thus, this research work looks at evaluating communication management as a way to understand how communication affects performance in the construction sector of Nigeria. The study also looked critically at the channels and barriers to communication in the construction company. It took a look at those with the responsibility for shaping and ensuring communication flows effectively for optimal project performance. For this reason, this writeup focuses on evaluating the similarities and differences in communication styles of construction professionals. However, this writeup derived information that relates to the objectives of the study from different books, journals, construction company reports and interviews granted by some stakeholders in Nigerian construction industry. Therefore, a historical research approach was adopted to review the literature. The paper shows the appreciation of communication and that there was a major gap in communication during project planning and execution, resulting in project cost overrun and project abandonment. The researcher made recommendations on the need to strengthen the chain of communication mechanism to be put in place to militate re-occurrence of such breakdown in communication. This will help improve project communication performance and save more in terms of time and resources.

ABSTRACT

The subject of aesthetics is often taken as dealing with questions of mere beauty, where the word ‘aesthetic’ is colloquially interchangeable with beauty and liking. In specialized architectural discourse, aesthetic is largely discussed on the basis of an object’s appearance. While ‘ethics denotes the theory of right action and good conduct because it is not limited to specific acts and defined moral codes, but encompasses the whole of moral ideals and behaviors in a person’s philosophy of life. The study serves to respond to why in architecture the main concern is what use is to be made of an artistic object that enable the function act as a condition to which the aesthetic ideas are confined. The paper aim toward addressing the broad limitation in architecture, aesthetics and ethical discourse beyond questions relating to purely visual phenomena in a philosophical manner using qualitative method as means for data collection via extensive literature reviews of books, journal and articles. The results of the study show that works of architecture are functional buildings that succeed also as aesthetic objects through, understanding the basic systems and principles of ethics which can help architects resolve those dilemmas encountered during design and building construction. The findings focused on helping practitioners determine what is right at a particular situation, making architectural practice integrally ethical because of the architect’s responsibilities for the health, and welfare of others and also for functional and aesthetically pleasing designs. Finally, it’s a form of philosophical rationale for peace education in architecture.

ANYANWU IGNATIUS UZOMA.

Department of Urban And Regional Planning, Abia State Polytechnic.

ABSTRACT

The paper examines how population control could be a tool for national development. In the federal government of Nigeria, under the military presidency of Gen. Ibrahim BadamosiBabangida, introduced a National Population Policy/target for the country. The main focus of the policy was on how to control population growth rate of the country. When one examines the present population situation of Nigeria, the National population target expectations, it is clear that not much has been achieved. The simple but not obvious reason in that the policy formulators failed to appreciate the fact that it is difficult to change people’s mind set, traditional and belief system. Changing this internalized habit and belief system requires a thorough education by professional. This paper maintained that population control if properly handled will serve as a transformational tool for National Development.

ABSTRACT

Housing is a basic human right, enshrined by the United Nations. In Nigeria, housing acquisition is faced with lots of problems especially for civil servants. In view of its enormous cost, housing is considered an item with the highest level of expenditure of every household, which is hardly financed from one’s salary. Access to housing finance, therefore, becomes essential in the acquisition or development of housing and unfortunately, this has always been a major problem of academic staff. This paper investigates the relationship between socio-economic characteristics and acquisition of housing by academic staff of Federal Polytechnic, Bida. The Socio-economic data of the target population were collected and analyzed using chronbach’s Alpha and multi-nominal regression model. The result of this analysis revealed inherent consistency (Reliability Coefficient = 0.733) in the data collected.. The multi-nominal logistic model further revealed that the age of staff (P=0.992-low income, P=0.576-High Income) and other sources of income (P=0.878–low income, .0914–High Income) contributed to affordability of housing acquisition for both high and low incomes earners. The study recommends that management of the institution should encourage academic staff to invest their loans in housing acquisition.

ABSTRACT

Entrepreneurship has emerged as the most compelling economic force the world has experienced in the last decade. over the years, architecture education has tried to strike a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of the profession, but more importantly, architectural courses need to teach students proactive roles in building their careers since the term architecture is no longer associated with designing and building physical spaces. The architecture of applications, websites, software, and networks illustrates the manifold nature of what it means to practice architecture today. Architecture has broadened as a field, merging various disciplines, technologies, and products. This expansion requires a new education model to teach students how to innovate and compete in an industry that is outward-facing. It’s well documented that most departments in tertiary institutions especially polytechnics now take entrepreneurship courses in both the National diploma level and Higher National diploma level and the Architecture departments is no exception. A critical look at the curriculum used by the entrepreneurship department shows that general entrepreneurship education is being taught and not “ Archiprenuership” i.e. the curriculum does not cover teaching enterprise-oriented professional development in architecture which will bring forth a generation of out-of-the-box job thinkers and job creators. This paper aims to design a curriculum model suitable for architectural entrepreneurship education that will ensure that out-of-the-box thinkers and job creators are trained. The objective is to critically assess the entrepreneurship curriculum in architecture education and suggest ways in which this curriculum can be improved to nurture these students to effectively combine design and entrepreneurship.

MAINTENANCE HABIT AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR PROTECTING COLLAPSE OF BUILDINGS IN NIGERIA: A REVIEW

BABA BENJAMIN

Department of Civil Engineering Technology, Federal Polytechnic, Oko Anambra State

ABSTRACT

The ultimate strength of the material is the limit load of the bearing capacity. On reaching this limit, the construction materials could already be damaged and their load bearing capacity, suddenly decreased permanently. If a system is properly designed, a local collapse should not normally be a cause of instant failure of a structure. The ultimate failure strength of the construction elements should be carefully considered in the design of structure to prevent collapse.

Abstract

Leveling is a field operation undertaken to find elevation of points or differences in elevation between points. It is a vital operation that is very necessary in collecting data for varying applications such as in mapping, engineering design and construction. The result obtained from the procedure are applied to design highways, railroads, canals, sewer water supply systems and in other facilities having to do with how the topography looks like, layout of construction projects which make use of elevation data to calculate volumes of earthworks and other materials and the consequences enabling investigation of drainage characteristics of an area in question as well as developing maps that show the general ground configuration and to study better subsidence of the earth and earth movement. This research is intended to use differential leveling method with different surveying equipment to make comparison of result obtained from them in terms of comparing obtained data using particular level surface. The equipment used are the digital level, Sokkia 510 Total station and Promark3 GPS, knowing that all surveying instruments are subject to instrumental, natural and personal errors. A leveling line with 16 points was established along Sani Abacha bye pass at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State of Nigeria. Leveling operation was carried out along the line and the information (data) obtained are as shown in table 2 below, a statistical analysis was performed and the result shows that there is no significant difference between the data obtained when using any of the three instruments. It was concluded that any of the instrument can be used interchangeably without distortion in the elevation of the points involved.

ABSTRACT

Heavy minerals analysis is a veritable tools in determining the compositional maturity of sediments. Their proper understanding is a pointer to determining the travel history of the sediment. Moreover, they are also very useful in determining the paleo-environment and paleo-climatic study with a view to knowing their provenance. Fourteen sandstone samples of Lokoja-Basange Formations (the Edo arm of Bida Basin) exposed at the road cut along Auchi Igarra road at the latitudes7o3213911N and 7o3214011N   were collected with the sole purpose to determining the provenance and composition maturity of the sediment. The result indicates that opaque are in abundance and non-opaque mineral having an average of  Zircon 23.5 % , Rutile 19.9%, Sillimanite 10.8%, Apatite10.2%, Tourmaline 22.3% and Garnet 11.0% are present in the sediment samples. Furthermore, the ultra-stable (Zircon, Tourmaline, Rutile) have higher percentage within the sample with zircon having the most 23.5% which is an indication of that they have have undergone long  travel history and her more resistant to chemical weathering  stable Apatite and Garnet are have low percentage in composition and moderately stable Sillimanite have the least composition. The Zircon, Tourmaline and Rutile (ZTR) index on all the fourteen samples values varies from 61.8% to71.4%  which is an indication that the sediment are immature. Furthermore, the presence of Zircon, Tourmaline and Rutile indicates that sediments originates from acidic igneous rock while, Garnet, Apatite and Sillimanite indicates metamorphic rocks.

Department of Urban and Regional Planning, School of Environmental Science Technology, Federal Polytechnic, Mubi Adamawa-Nigeria.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to Analyse the Activities of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the Provision of Infrastracture and Services in Cities. Specifically, the objectives of the study are to examine the concepts of CBOs and Infrastructure provision, identify the categories of Community-Based Organizations and their characteristics, examine the characteristics of projects undertaken by community-based organizations in urban areas as well as identify challenges being faced by Community-Based Organizations in carrying out development projects. Data was collected through literature review. The study concluded that whatever the reason for organization might be the bottom line and that for things to go on well there is need for some sort of organizing. For CBOs, elements of all these views apply. It was therefore, recommended by the study that, CBOs should emphasize more on capacity building of organizations in order to achieve community participation in development initiatives and capacity building for individuals that relates to advocacy skills, training abilities, and technical skills. And that government at all levels should encourage the proliferation of and economically support the goals of CBOs by Creating a common purse where both governmental and non-governmental organizations could contribute their quota among others.
