Abstract

The study focused on Kaduna State in Nigeria and the effects of insecurity on teachers’ mental health and the educational system. The study’s goal was to determine the root causes and effects of teachers’ mental health insecurity because of ongoing armed herdsmen attacks on both teachers and students in classrooms, which have resulted in the closure of multiple schools in Northern Nigerian States. The descriptive survey design was based on three research questions that served as the main guiding concepts for the study. 240 respondents were chosen from six Kaduna State schools using a purposive selection technique to build up the sample. A 40-item questionnaire was created by the researcher, and mean was used to analyse the data. The study’s findings showed how seriously ill schoolteachers are, and they received a failing grade for their general lack of understanding of mental health. The researcher proposed a paradigm for mental health counselling for teachers and students based on their findings. To protect not only the mental health of educators but also the mental health of the Nigerian population, he also suggested that the Nigerian government concentrate more of its policies and efforts on lowering or eliminating insecurity in Nigeria.

Abstract

Teaching is becoming one of the most challenging professions globally. This is because knowledge is expanding rapidly, hence modern technologies demand that teachers should learn how to use these technologies in teaching and learning. While new technologies increase teachers’ professional development particularly in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), being computer literate has become paramount as it provides flexible environment for teaching and learning at any time anywhere. This study examined utilization of ICT by lecturers in Kashim Ibrahim College of Education Maiduguri,  Borno state Nigeria. The study focused on the lecturers’ ICT knowledge, ICT incentive and social networking. The data were collected from 120 lecturers by means of closed ended questionnaire titled “ICT Professional Development of Lecturers (IPDLO)’. The data was analyzed using statistical package of social science (SPSS) version 20.0. Decisions were made based on the mean scores of 2.50. Any mean score that was 2.50 and above was accepted while below 2.50 was rejected. The findings of the study indicated that majority of lecturers in the college are computer literate but they do not utilize the knowledge of ICTin teaching and learning. The findings also recorded that majority of the respondents do not appreciate the use of computer based-test. It is recommended among others that the college management should equip the department/school with computer and internet facilities and other necessary tools like projectors and video viewers because the absence of these facilities discourages and sometimes disables the lecturers from the use of ICT.

Abstract

Education has been considered a key cum very important structure of the human society. By implication, education is derived from the noun educate which implies to impact knowledge. It is note worthy to establish that education is divided into two main forms of formal and informal education. Formal education can simply be taken for that form of education that uses a well- planned curriculum. It is usually carried out by personnel who are well and specially trained for that purpose otherwise considered as teachers. On the other side of the same coin, informal education is the one that takes place at home which usually is considered the child’s first point of call upon birth. The two basic forms of education in truth complement each other. None can therefore claim to be more important than the other. In recent times in Nigeria, it has been observed that education has seemingly been relegated to the background and its importance so much compromised and undermined. Infact, the genuine purpose of education has been defeated and abused by almost all and sundry as none take its impact for a pint of salt. Both teachers, learners and various stake holders are caught in the web as its benefits has been marred by malpractices and  corruption. This research is an effort at exposing the causes, dangers and possible ways out of this ugly doldrums in Nigeria. Data collection methods as the questionnaire, interview, textbooks, newspapers and internet were adopted. The functionalist theory was considered most appropriate as theoretical framework for analysis, thereafter, recommendations were made.

Section A solicited  for Demographic information of respondents while section B posed questions related to item construction at various degree. The response format was on 4 point Likert scale weighted as, strongly agree (SA=4pts) Agree (A=3pts), Strongly Disagree (SD=2pts) and Disagree (DA=1pts). A measure of internal consistency using Cronbach alpha was determined and reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained which showed high degree of reliability of the instrument.. Data was analyzed using frequency count, simple percentages and chi-square cross tabulation. Results showed that majority of the teachers that write items in negative form didn’t capitalized or underline the items, similarly, the finding also revealed that part of the respondent didn’t arrange items in order of difficulty while constructing test item.  Qualifications of Junior Secondary Teachers do not significantly influence their Competency in Item construction. The outcome also indicated that gender difference was statistically not significant; hence possession of technical skill on item construction is uniform among the participant. The researcher recommends that Teacher should consider arranging item in order of difficulty, especially from simple to complex. Doing this will motivate students in developing confidence while answering questions. An in-house training or workshop on item construction should be conducted, especially to those that lack education qualification as well as those having lowest teaching qualification.
