INVESTIGATING COMMUNICATION AND DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES IN SELECT TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN RIVERS STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated communication and decision-making processes in select tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of communication and participatory decision-making on stakeholders’ relationships in select tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Among other objectives, the study investigated the avenues for stakeholders’ participation in decision-making in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The study was anchored on the Stakeholder theory. Descriptive survey research design was used. A total of 83,711 formed the population. Using the multi-stage sampling procedure, a sample size of 384 was used. Findings of the study showed that the dominant communication patterns used for stakeholder engagement in tertiary institutions in Rivers State were downward and horizontal communication patterns. The study recommended, among other things, that tertiary institutions in Rivers State should create an information centre through which stakeholders can obtain information and communicate with authorities of the institutions.

ROLE OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS FOR EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS FOR HUMAN SECURITY IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Secondary Education is one of the bedrock and the foundation level in Nigerian educational system. As a result of its importance, there is need to effectively and efficiently manage or administer resources (Human and materials) in Secondary Schools in order to realize the laudable objectives of Secondary Education as enshrined in the National Policy on Education. The burden and success or otherwise of managing these resources lies on the School administrators. In an attempt to address this, issues like concept of administration, Schools, School administrators, Role of School administrators, Qualities of a good administrator were discussed. It was concluded that School administrators plays a vital role in the development of this level of education and in addition to this, lack of managerial skills from the part of school managers contributes to non-realization of goals and objectives of Secondary level of education in the country. It was recommended that, Government should provide adequate funding to education sector in order to produce a sound and literate future generations for our institutions of higher for the provision of the required manpower for the socio-economic and political development of the most populous Black Country in the world.

THE INFLUENCE OF LABORATORY FACILITIES ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICS A STUDY OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN GUJBA L.G.A OF YOBE STATE

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the relationship between laboratory facilities, teacher’s qualification, practical periods, interest in physics and students performance in physics. Subjects were eight teachers and one hundred and one students from 5 secondary schools in Gujba L.G.A of Yobe State. Using chi-square (X2), results showed that the hypothesis were confirmed at 0.5df, Xc2greater than Xt2 = 0.455, it was therefore concluded that students would perform better with more practical periods, good physics laboratory facilities and qualified teachers.

AUGUSTINE’S EDUCATIONAL PRAXIS AS A TEACHER

Abstract

This piece has studied Augustine’s educational praxis as a teacher, beginning from his teaching experience in Thagaste, through his experiences in Carthage, Rome, Milan and later as a father to Adeodatus. The generality of his experiences as a teacher reveals that he was a great teacher. He was a teacher’s teacher; his life was permeated with education; he drastically influenced much of subsequent education structures. This work investigates his wealth of experience in the classroom and his reflections on teaching with the aim of seeing its implications for the climate we should expect in a teacher-student relationship for better educational outcomes. For the purpose of this work, the historical method of inquiry is employed.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEADS OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS’ MOTIVATION; MAINTAINACE OF DISCIPLINE AND ACADEMIC STAFF PERFORMANCE IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS, BORNO STATE NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examined relationship between heads of tertiary institutions’ motivation, maintenance of discipline and academic staff performance in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno state, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to determine relationship between: heads of tertiary institutions motivation, maintenance of discipline of and academic staff performance in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno state. Two null hypotheses which include: No significant relationship between heads of tertiary institutions motivation and academic staff performance, No significant relationship between heads of tertiary institutions’ maintenance of discipline and academic staff performance were tested at .05 level of significant. Correlational research design was adopted. The population for the study comprised of 1,211 academic staff and 7 heads of tertiary institutions in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno state, Nigeria. Stratified sampling technique was used to form of simple of 163 academic staff and 7 heads of tertiary institutions. 2 sets of questionnaire were used as an instrument for data collection. The first set of questionnaire was used to obtain information from heads of tertiary institutions with regard to motivation and maintenance of discipline, while the second set of the questionnaire was used to seek information by academic staff with regard to their performance and Cronbach’s Alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The reliability coefficient was 0.72 mean standard deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) were used to analyze the data obtained. The findings of the study reveal that there was significant relationship between heads of tertiary institutions motivation and academic staff performance and significant positive relationship existed between heads of tertiary institutions maintenance of discipline and academic staff performance in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State Nigeria. Base on the findings, it was recommended that motivation and maintenance of discipline prioritized as they were related to academic staff.

SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF EDUCATIONALLY ENLIGHTENED INDIGENES OF POTISKUM LOCAL GOVERNMENT LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF YOBE STATE

Abstract

The study examined the issues surrounding the failure recorded in projects of community development in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe state. The study employed a survey research design. The population for the study consisted of all the adult male and female members of Potiskum local government area of Yobe state. The sample for the study was 292 male and female respondents. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. From the analysis of the collected data, it was revealed that non-involvement of community members which leads to non-commitment in the projects of development accounted for failure of projects of development. The study also revealed that lack of good leadership and ineffective communication are factors that also lead to failure of projects of development. Based on these findings recommendations were made among which is that good leadership, effective communication with community participation should be ensured, in projects of community development so that sustainability of projects would be ensured.

MASS MEDIA EFFECTS ON THE SOCIALIZATION OF CHILDREN OF NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY STAFF SCHOOL, KEFFI

Abstract

This study examines Mass Media Effects on the Socialization of Children of Nasarawa State University Staff School, Keffi with the aim of assessing the impact mass media on socialization process of children and to ascertain the roles of mass media on the study population. As a social survey type of study, the study randomly select 200 respondents and the data were analyzed using simple percentage. The findings of the study revealed that parents are in full support and control of these     various forms of socialization available to the proper upbringing of the children which means a guided learning is taking place. There is high degree of required positive change in children compared to those who have shown negative changes. The study concludes that mass media as a socializing agent inculcate moral training, character training, vocational training, social training and several others. The study recommend that to curb the negative influence of the mass media on children’s socialization in Nasarawa State University Staff School, Keffi, media literacy programmes should be designed to enlighten the children about the implications of the negative media content and Parents should evaluate a means of regulating what their children/wards view on air or listen to.

 

 

QUALITY ASSURANCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: CHALLENGES & PROSPECTS

Abstract

The concept quality assurance is focused on the prevention of the production of non-conforming products or services and much emphasis is placed on the activities involved in the process of production. Quality of higher education and the need for effective quality assurance mechanisms beyond those of institutions themselves are becoming priority themes in national strategies for higher education. This paper examines the literature surrounding quality assurance in global higher education. It provides an overview of accreditation as a mechanism to ensure quality in higher education, explores the concept of quality (including definitions of quality and quality assurance). finally, the paper provides a review of research on the challenges as well as the prospecs of quality assurance practices, in higher education institutions.

Abstract

This paper focused on reading attitude of French students in African literature courses in Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo in order to achieve the aim of French Educational objectives in Nigerian Colleges of Education. Three research questions, a 25-item instrument were employed, using 89 respondents and data were analyzed through simple percentage. The findings of this study have, therefore, proved reading to be vital tip to success and exposure strategy to political and socio-cultural life in French-speaking African nations.

DETERMINING   ACADEMICIANS LEVELS OF STRESS IN TERTIARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN KADUNA STATE: THE SITUATION IN KADUNA POLYTECHNIC

ABSTRACT

This empirical study determined the stress levels of academic staff in Kaduna Polytechnic. Stress among academicians in tertiary institutions is a major psycho-social issue that is of concerned to employees, employers, psychologists and researchers. Five null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study.A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was utilized to select 250 lecturers in the 2014/2015 academic session. The instrument for data collection was adapted from the well-known DHFS Wellness Perceived Stress Scale developed by Cohen (1983) structured on a five-point rating scale. Its computed reliability using Cronbach alpha wascoefficient .70. The data was analyzed using parametric statistics of t-test and one-way ANOVA. The results indicated that three null hypotheses were statistically significant while two were found not to be significant. The stress levels of lecturers are significantly high. Based on these findings, recommendations were made among which is institutional management and other stakeholders should provide psychological and academic counseling services to the generality of the lecturers, so that they can achieve and maintain a better state of well-being.

Abstract

Special libraries and their collections are meant for only bona-fide members and on real occasion can be used on request by erudite researchers elsewhere. The utilization of Special Libraries collections warrant to be void of problems in the 21st century, but ironically, there are some special libraries in Nigeria that their resources are not utilized, due to some factors. The study was born to identify the staff utilization of Nigerian Institute of Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) Library resources.  The researchers adopted a descriptive survey research method and utilized questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed among others lack of skilled personnels, lack of adequate funds, poor power supply, lack of up-to-date resources are some of the problems confronting utilization of special libraries collections.
