National Defence College, Abuja, Nigeria Post-Graduate School, Department of History and International Studies, Federal University of Lafia, Lafia, Nigeria

Abstract

Although colonialism positively impacted on colonised nations, it left behind more adverse impacts on them. Quite regrettably, the negative legacies of colonialism have been sustained by various indigenous Nigerian governments since independence. Drawing from secondary data, this paper reveals that the colonialists laid the foundation for the North-South divide in Nigeria, while Nigerian indigenous leaders have sustained and worsened colonial wrongs. It concisely examines the negative socio-political legacies (misdeeds) of the colonialists, which basically include the forced amalgamation of the North and the South by Lord Luggard, wrong boundary demarcation, obnoxious colonial policies, and the erosion of indigenous Nigerian cultures and systems. The indigenous leaders have continuously degenerated the colonial wrongs with failed leadership, rural underdevelopment, corruption, incitement, ethno-religious politics and discrimination, regionalism, Hausa-Fulani political hegemony, resource allocation and control contestation, citizenship question [indigene vs. non-indigene palaver], ethnic hate and religious fundamentalism, among others. In conclusion, the study blames both colonial and indigenous Nigerian leaders for the sustained division between the North and the South. It calls for a change through operational legislations. It is grounded by the diffusion innovation theory, which explains why and how Nigerian leaders have learnt from colonial leaders, adopted and sustained their negative leadership legacies.

Abstract

Deforestation and Forest degradation is one of the major environmental problem ravishing the world today, Charcoal production involves a wholesome dependency on the natural woodlands which contributes to deforestation, leading to the loss of valuable resources and dangerous interference with the environment. The adverse effect of deforestation is climate change through the release of large amounts of greenhouse gases that fuel global warming. Charcoal production reduces the bio-productivity of ecosystems by disrupting the habitats of thousands of species, and gradually transforms forest lands into barren deserts. Consequently, by impoverishing our natural environments, in the long run deforestation affects our lives and economy negatively. Over the years, sustainable management of forest resources has been of primary concern due to its potential impact on biological diversity and importance in maintaining global ecological function.

The most used technology in the production of charcoal for commercial and domestic purposes in Nasarawa state of Nigeria is the use of Kiln which is economically ineffective and environmentally unfriendly. Production processes from cutting down of trees, to logging, stocking, covering, burning, separation and bagging. Results in dangers to the biodiversity, such as introducing excess carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which can affect the health of producers, introduction of toxic substance into the soil which affects the structure of the soil and exposure of bare surfaces which can lead to erosion. This study based on the concept of sustainable forest management and theory of common good, aim at exposing the effect of this technology and suggests sustainable solutions. Primary and secondary data will be utilized and analyzed using statistical, inferential and Geospatial techniques. It is recommended that recommends that traditional and religious leaders should e used to enlighten the charcoal producers on the effect of the used technology and also a more efficient and less harmful technology should be invested in.

Abstract

Female Quantity Surveyors’ participation in the Nigerian construction industry is low, but the reasons for such low participation are not well understood. The study assessed the factors driving, as well as challenges that hinder participation of female Quantity Surveyors (QSs) in the Nigerian construction industry. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire survey of 78 male and 110 female QSs in the public and private sector in Abuja. Male respondents were randomly sampled while a census of the female QSs was taken. Analysis of data was carried out using frequency counts, percentile, mean score and T- Test. The most important key motivational factor driving female QSs’ participation is “completion of a construction-related course of study”. On the other hand, “Unsociable work hours” and “denial of professional activity by colleagues due to family commitment” are the two top challenges encountered by female QSs. It was thus recommended that to improve the level of participation of female Quantity Surveyors, the female QSs should be motivated through freedom to exercise and experiment new ideas, discretion to make decisions and take the initiative in their assigned roles.

Abstract

Several research findings have established the need to regulate advertisements of potentially harmful products. Some of these products include junk foods, cigarettes and alcohol. Gambling is one of the services that call for caution and restrictions (in terms of advertisements) due to the inherent risk of addiction. The caution becomes imperative these days, considering the ease of access and availability of betting options made possible by internet and other wireless technology. Though the powerful impact of advertisements on adolescents and youths have been studied in several public health domains, the effects of gambling advertisements on youths have been largely neglected. Consequently, this study attempts to examine the influence of online football betting advertisements deployed in football betting (with emphasis on online gambling) and how they may escalate the growing negative effects on youths, with a view to recommending policies aimed at regulating the marketing of gambling products to minimize the risks presented to youths, thereby stemming the dangerous growing tide of gambling and forestalling potential future problems. The study was carried out using the quantitative research method. With the use of multi stage sampling techniques, self-structured questionnaire was administered on 1067 participants randomly selected across three state capitals (Lagos, Ibadan, Oshogbo) in South West Nigeria. Six hypotheses were drawn and analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The test of hypotheses was done using simple and multiple linear regression, with the adoption of Statistical Product and Services Solution (SPSS 22). The study concluded that youths engage in football betting as a result of increased exposure to online football betting advertisements, which has the tendency of resulting in football betting addiction, if not regulated

Abstract

Sorption isotherms of bitter kola (Garcina kola) were determined experimentally using the static gravimetric method at 30 0C, 40 0C, 50 0C and 60 0C within the range of 0.113 – 0.970 water activity. The equilibrium moisture content increased with increasing water activity at a given temperature and decreases with increase in temperature. The experimentally obtained data were used to evaluate the suitability of BET, GAB and Oswin models. The models’ parameters were computed using an iterative nonlinear regression technique. The experimental data were also fitted to an empirical model using multiple regression analysis and the results were compared. Monolayer moisture content was determined from BET and GAB models, the values were observed to be consistent with other food materials. The sorption isotherm curves obtained were sigmoidal (typical type II isotherm). The results demonstrated that the three models adequately predicted the equilibrium moisture content of bitter kola. On the basis of fit, all the models were suitable for describing the observed data. The best result on the basis of monolayer moisture content was observed at 30 0C and 40 0C. This reveals that at low temperatures, the shelf life of bitter kola is extended.

This situation emanated as a result of the multi –dimensional bundle of services and a bundle of contradictions and paradoxes that housing is known for. The study aimed at examining the impact of neighbourhood characteristics on rental values of residential properties in Minna, Nigeria and the objectives were (i) to assess the adequacy of the identified neighbourhood characteristics in the study area,(ii) To examine the current rental values of the class of residential property in the study area. and (iii) to examine the relationship between neighbourhood characteristics and rental values of residential properties. However, the methodology adopted was the use of a structured questionnaire with closed ended questions to extract data from 621 randomly administered questionnaire across the three categories of residential properties. The data were subjected to the use of both descriptive (frequency table, and a 5 point likert scale) and inferential (chi-square) statistical analysis. Results from the analysis revealed that rental values of residential properties in F-lay out are higher than that of the residential properties in Tunga low cost, and the rent in Bosso neighbourhood is relatively higher than that of Tunga low cost respectively, this is in relation to the variation in the quality of neighbourhood characteristics in these areas respectively. In order not to have a wide disparity of rental values that emerges among similar categories of residential properties within the same market, it is therefore recommended that the government should undertake an aggressive infrastructural facilities development, particularly in the high density areas and to also improve the number and quality of the existing amenities in the low and medium density areas.

ABSTRACT

Police operations are expected to cover areas such as peace maintenance, combating crime patrolling and communication. However, there has been a steady increase in the spate of insecurity in Nigeria between 2009 and 2020. This has caused the death of thousands of people and destruction of property on account of Boko Haram criminality, kidnapping, herdsmen menace, armed banditry and ritual killings. The Nigeria Police is incapable to combat this insecurity effectively in spite of the efforts of their numerous tactical outfits such as the Mobile police, Anti-cultism, Anti-kidnapping, Special Weapon and Tactics, and Anti-Terrorist. It is worrisome that the Nigeria Police Force serving in various foreign missions have been applauded and rated high in their tactical operational effectiveness but such could not be achieved domestically. Relying on both primary and secondary sources of information, the paper found that work conditions that the operatives of the Nigeria police force had to face all the time especially with regard to scarcity of modern equipment affects their operational capacity. The paper also found that lack of adequate education among the operatives as well as low staff strength, affect their performance. The paper recommended that there must be incentives, good condition of service, and provision of adequate operational infrastructure for effective policing.
