he study is designed to investigate edutainment as a panacea for the challenges of Nigerian education. One research question and two hypotheses were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design, and employed the non-randomized pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design involving two groups of students. One group exposed to edutainment method with the control group not exposed to edutainment method. The population comprised of 4,550 students in 45 public and private secondary schools in Zaria Zonal Educational InspectorateBoard. The sample comprises of 120 SS II students from two secondary schools, 60 from each of the sampled schools, each of which was divided into experimental and control groups.Simple random sampling technique was used to select the schools while intact class sampling technique was used to select the classes and students. The paired sample t-test statistics showed that a significant difference exists between the pre-test and post-test scores of students taught with edutainment method as there was a significant increase in the mean scores of those taught with edutainment method. Thus, edutainment method positively impacted in the achievement of students. Recommendations such as teachers, administrations and curriculum planners should emphasize the use of edutainment method in teaching and formulating administrative policies in CRK curriculum in schools, among others are proffered.

ABSTRACT

unctional education consists of technical, vocational and entrepreneurship trainings that prepare the trainees to either be readily employable in the labour market or equips them with the competence for self-reliance and to make them become employer of labour. Functional education gives birth to a creative economy. Creativity is a key driver to a sustainable development in the global economy. However, in many nations creativity is not given much importance in the curricula, hence the graduates left school without competence for creativity and innovation. The consequence of this is that they would not be adequately prepared for the world of work. In today’s world of global competition and complex problems, creative intelligence and innovative capacity are basic requirements in the labour market. Creative intelligence and innovation should be part of the school curricula at all levels of Nigerian educational system. We need educational curricula that include exploration, problem solving and diversity. It is important that the educational system train students according to the needs in their respective societies. There is need for functional education for the promotion of progressive and productive nations. To this end school programs need to be relevant, practical, creative and innovative for the acquisition of appropriate skills and the development of mental, physical and social abilities and competences as equipment for the individual to live in and contribute to the development of the society. This paper is an appraisal of the challenges and prospects of functional education in the global economy and it recommends functional education for sustainable development as panacea to unemployment.

oday’s world is knowledge driven and the awareness has resulted to overlearning of the pre-school children. Children are cossetted and pressured in the same measure. Overlearning is perceived from two dimensions namely, over certification and over tutoring. This study is concerned with the second dimension-over tutoring. Overlearning is not beneficial to the pre-school children in the later life achievements in terms of academic and labour acquisitions. Overlearning is a phenomenon in which a pre-school child feels burdened or oppressed by the weight of his or her learning. Overlearning of pre-school children is a burden both to the children who over attend not only regular school but a series of after school and holiday lessons that are run privately where they cram into their over stimulated brains and also a burden to the parents who have no choice than to do their children’s excessive homework. Parents perceive overlearning as a tool which deprives the children of play time. Therefore this paper was geared to determine the perception of parents towards long hours the children spend on learning, the excessive homework of the children and deprivation of play with a view to make recommendations to pre-school centres’ caregivers. These would restore fun and oust overlearning of the pre-school children in order to produce children who would develop holistically.
