CHIGBO GERALDINE NGOZI; SULEIMAN ONIYANGI; & KANU NNABUGWU CHIDIEBERE

Abstract

The present singularity of ‘unemployment increase’ that is seen across numerous emerging economies, Nigeria included, poses extensive encounters to the age-long economic assumption that the increase in the gross domestic product (GDP) of an economy decreases unemployment. Many efforts have been made to authenticate this assumption that is called Okun’s Law.  Though, current practical studies of the Nigerian economy mostly attentive on total output thereby not minding the variance employment engendering dimensions of sectors in the economy This study therefore, examines the short-run and long-run belongings of industrial sectors’ development on unemployment in Nigeria with time series data across 1981-2016. The econometric technique employed in the research is the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach. The analysis began with pre-tests for stationarity using Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root tests. Four ARDL models were specified. At first, bound testing revealed the existence of correlation between unemployment and GDP increase.  The study indicated that increase in GDP is directly related to unemployment in the long run but no correlation is suggested in the short run. The early disaggregation of GDP into its components that is agriculture, industry, construction, trade and services, in the second ARDL model, showed no long run relationship between unemployment the disaggregated GDP. In the third model, correlation was indicated to exist between unemployment, agriculture, industry, services solid minerals and granite. The fourth description also shows that there is correlation between unemployment, manufacturing, oil and gas, trade and transport. While industries and services were found to be significantly and positively related to unemployment in the long run, the results on other variables were found to be mixed and insignificant. Also, the short run relationship between unemployment and all the explanatory variables were mixed but statistically insignificant. The study therefore suggests that there is need for faking a link between the principal, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy, with the agricultural sector related to the industrial sectors by increasing the value chain from agricultural produce to finished manufacturing goods.  This will lessen dependence on imported raw materials and spear parts used for manufacturing and agricultural production and thereby grow labour participation rate and employment making capacity of manufacturing and other sectorial progress in the economy.

Abstract

Global transfers is presently applauded as the most steady and reliable of all the universal flows. It is principally an significant cause of influxes to emerging economies, as they derive large sums of overseas exchange that directly supports households in the country. This research was driven by the enormous funds that Nigeria in particular receives as global transfers that presently places her number one in Africa and number six in the World. Quite a lot of studies indicates that transfers has obstructed positively on economic progress, expansion, deficiency, inequality amongst others. Nevertheless, this paper donates to literature by probing the variance manufacturing sector investments between payment recipients and non-recipients. The paper used secondary data from a selected household survey that were generated by a partnership program between the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Centre for Demographic and Allied Research (CDAR) University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2011. The objective was determined with the help of a tendency notch matching method. This paper used five matching strategies to indicate that payment receivers slightly have greater investments in industrial development than their equals, though not significantly. This paper suggests that the investment temperature for the industrial sector be rationalized with more industrial clusters, structures should be put in place and power substitutes to entice the enormous resources that come in as transfers into this rewarding sector.

Department of Arts and Social Science Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria.

Abstract

This paper examined the place of History in the curriculum of secondary education in Nigeria. The paper argues that at the secondary education level, students are taught a variety of subjects that are supposed to help guide them in their future career and personal choices. It is during these teenage years of moving into adulthood that young people often take on their most formidable views and perspectives about the world in which we live. The objectives of the paper were to: highlight the significance of history in the curriculum of secondary education level, provide a brief on the obnoxious scrapping of history from the curriculum of secondary education, and consider the challenges of implementing the curriculum of history. The study which utilized published works and online materials established that the Nigerian government during the 2009/2010 academic session scrapped history from the curriculum of secondary education. The scrapping made history unpopular and pre-disposed to the danger of losing its hitherto privileged position. The study concluded that whether for career purposes or for curiosity’s sake, it is important for people to have a basic understanding of what has driven, and what drives the world in which we live, hence the place of history in the curriculum of secondary education.

Abstract

For the effective operations of industrial and domestic systems, power in the right quality and quantity has to be supplied. But this is not always possible due to disturbances on transmission and distribution lines. These disturbances if not properly checked could lead to great losses to both lives and properties. This research focuses on the development and simulation of experimental guide to study sag on power lines. Voltage sag is the sudden drop in the rms supply voltage to between 0.1 to 0.9 pu, it can be caused by the switching ON of heavy loads with high start-up current or as a result of faults on transmission and distribution lines. Various techniques have been proposed for its mitigation ranging from the use of D-STATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator), tap changers, Ferro resonant transformers to the use of DVR (Dynamic Voltage Restorer) which is the most popular technique. In this work, the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi campus was modeled as load centre using Matlab/Simulink where single phase and three phase faults were simulated respectively, over-current protection scheme was also simulated using OCR (Over Current Relay) on the transmission/distribution lines. The effects of starting an induction motor was experimented in the school’s Electrical Power laboratory to check for the occurrence of voltage sag. At the end of this research, simulated and experimental results were obtained showing the existence of the sagging problem in power systems and proposed the effective means of tackling it.
