DR. OLADELE AYODEJI ILESANMI

Department Of Business Administration, Osun State University, Okuku Campus, Osogbo, Nigeria

Abstract

There is usually a gap between knowing and doing that is between theory and practice. The possibilities of progress of any nation are a function of the state of its management arts and science status of the people in the society. The business environment is constantly changing and success is therefore transitory. Nigeria cannot afford to remain static, it must change. Of course, change is the single most important element of successful organisational management. This paper examines the perspective of organisational management as key to accelerate national development in Nigeria. This paper concludes that, the challenge of today and tomorrow relates to, how we can build on our achievements, ensure continuous improvement in the welfare of the people and guarantee political, social and economic stability. This paper recommends that organisational leadership should: adequately empowers workers and identify with their personal needs through motivation, match their words with action, total commitment to national goals and objectives, focus attention on both written agreements and implied expectations of the unwritten social contacts which defines the connection between the leader, an organisation and the people, enhance ability through human capital development, offer opportunity for knowledge creation, retention and transfer, fostering social cohesion and informal network to reduce the amount of distance either physically or psychologically between the leader and the people and the need to understand the change and what it entails in terms of leadership, culture, process, policies and implementation.

*Department of Public Administration Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa Edo State, Nigeria **Department of public administration Auchi polytechnic, Auchi, Edo state, Nigeria

Abstract

The paper is to proffer solution to the problems of financing higher education in Nigeria. Many people have continued to clamour for free university education. It sounds exciting and noble. However, in the real sense of it, someone has to pay for it. Those who are preaching that gospel believe government should do everything for her people. University education generates public as well as private interests. One thing is absolutely clear, the level of education funding has continued to decline thereby inflicting serious damage on the system of which only a massive contribution of funds can help to rejuvenate it. The author used secondary sources of information. It was recommended among others that federal and state governments should invigorate scholarship schemes, not only as a source of funding but also as a means of identifying and developing productive high level manpower. It was concluded that the provision of education or should be shared responsibility among the federal, state, private sectors and parents.

Department of Educational Foundations Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto **Department of Educational Foundations Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto

Abstract

This Paper examined Role of Discipline in Enhancing Primary School Management in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges.  Primary education is very important in the Nigerian education system. It is the oldest system. Its history in the geographical entity that is now known as Nigeria, dates back to 170 years ago, Lack of discipline in primary school in Nigeria is a challenge to education management in Nigeria. The need for discipline from the grassroot of our educational system has become the turning point in the administration of educational institutions in Nigeria. Primary Education has been universally accepted as an instrument of change and potent tool for socioeconomic development. It is the only weapon yet known for the achievement of purposeful human development objectives in this era of technology driven world economic order. In coping with the demand of social change, Primary education in Nigeria has undergone series of changes in order to develop Nigeria’s economy and meet the aspirations of the citizenry. However, the changes in the system have become mere nomenclature as they have failed to produce the desired results in view of the contending issues that are left unresolved. Thus, inability of the Nigerian government to implement the articulated educational policies, insufficient access, and inadequate infrastructure, among other issues are inimical not only to the educational development but its attendant socioeconomic backwardness. Among the recommendations made are tha, Primary Administrators should establish clear rules and procedures and instruct pupils on how to follow them, giving primary level children and those with low socio-economic status in particular a great deal of instruction, practice and reminders, Make clear to pupils the consequences of behavior, Enforce classroom rules promptly, consistently, and equitably from the very first day of school and finally, Make use of humor, when suitable to stimulate pupils’ interest to reduce classroom tensions.

1ALKALI 2ISAH IBRAHIM 3OLATUNJI TUNDE E.

Department of General Studies, Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, Zaria, Nigeria.

Abstract:

Nigeria, a country so richly endowed in natural resources and human capital is yet to find its rightful footing among the strong economic comity of nations. A major reason being responsible for this economic stagnation is the phenomenon of corruption and economic mismanagement leading to the LOSSES as against the GAINS. Governments have not been pragmatic in implementing the policies of privatization and commercialization as it should. The loses appear stronger than the gains because of corruption and bad political leadership.

GIDEON, V. O. (Ph.D)

Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER)

Abstract

The polytechnics focused on the impartation of technical skills so as to prepare students for employment or self-reliance. However, many polytechnic graduates probably do not possess the skills required in the labour market. This study examined the relationships between curriculum contents’ adequacy and technical skills acquisition in selected South-West Nigerian polytechnics. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 5,960 Higher National Diploma (HND) II full time students of the nine sampled polytechnics in South-West Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was applied to select 596 (ten percent) students in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical/Electronics and Computer Engineering Departments. The research instrument used for data collection was “Skills Acquisition and Graduates’ Employment Questionnaire (SAGEQ)”   The hypothesis that stated that there is no significant relationship between curriculum contents’ adequacy and technical skills acquisition was tested at.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The tested hypothesis showed that; there was a significant relationship between curriculum contents’ adequacy and graduates’ employment hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. The study recommended more practical work to complement theories in polytechnics; provision of modern resources and qualified staff for impartation of skills, the curricula of polytechnics should be reviewed to align with labour market’s demands and the gap between school and work place should be bridged through Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

POVERTY ERADICATION, POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: NIGERIA AND THE LESSONS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

SULAIMAN SHEHU ESQ.,

Dept. Of public administration, school of business studies, federal polytechnic, bauchi, nigeria

Abstract

This study aiming to bring out the lessons that the historical experience of mankind in the 20th century has about the relationship between poverty and sustainable human development. We cannot, however, grasp these lessons, and use them to positively shape our future without an understanding of the meanings and changing significance of poverty in human society. On the basis of it, they rabidly campaign and systematically enforce a bundle of self-serving and somehow contradictory policies and programmes widely known as poverty alleviation. It is not just that the high level of deprivation suffered by the poor reduces their usefulness as consumers of goods and services produced by others, but their exercise of their mental and manual capacities as citizens who have social, educational, cultural, legal, political and economic roles and responsibilities, are severely crippled. Their situation of powerlessness over the essentials for existence generates situations of insecurity within the family, in the neighbourhood, in the community, in the regions and in the whole country. The Federal Government encouraged and “assisted” by the IMF embarked on poverty Alleviation programme for almost three decades now. But the result is as accurate as mathematical equation, few thousands who move out through poverty Alleviation Programmes like micro-credit, and others, will have their place taken by the two or three million who will be thrown into poverty by the free market economic reforms, which the western powers have always been advocating.

ACHIEVING COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE THROUGH ENTREPRENEURIAL ORIENTATION STRATEGIES

IBRAHIM ABUBAKAR MIKUGI

Department of Business Administration and Management, the Federal Polytechnic, P.M.B. 55 Bida, Niger State

ABSTRACT

Competitive Advantage and entrepreneurial orientation have grown separately from each other, though joined eventually when they focused on how organisations adapt to competitive environment and changes in the creation of goods, services and wealth for the sake of performance and survival. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation strategies and competitive advantage. Most business organisations find it difficult to survive in the industry they operate in. This largely could be due their inability to map out a strong strategic approach to withstand the competitive environment they may find themselves, hence their products and services tend to suffer stiff competition as a result of weak strategy implementation. The paper implored a qualitative research approach as methodology. Secondary data was used through existing literature, theoretical and conceptual perspectives which dwell on strategy making modes along 5ps, i.e Plan, Position, Pattern, Perspective and Ploy. This Modes were mapped out with dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation which includes Innovativeness, Proactiveness, Risk Taking, Competitive Aggressiveness and Autonomy. The study concluded that if the framework developed by this study is implemented by organisations, it can help in achieving superior performance relative to other competitors in the same industry.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REPORTING AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF LISTED OIL AND GAS COMPANIES IN NIGERIA

YUSUF NUHU AND MUHIBBAT ABDULLAHI

Department of Accounting and Finance, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi

ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the financial performance of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. The study examines the influence of three CSR dimensions (environment, social and economic) on the Financial Performance (FP) of the sampled firms. The study utilized documentary data collected from annual reports and accounts of the sampled companies for the periods 2007 to 2016. Data was first analyzed by means of descriptive statistics to provide summary statistics for the variables and subsequently, correlation analysis was carried out using Pearson correlation technique for the correlation between the dependent and independent variables. A panel data regression technique was employed for the analysis. The study reveals that two of the three CSR dimensions (environment and economic) have significant positive effect on the Financial Performance while one dimension has a positive but insignificant effect on FP. Furthermore, the study finds an overall significant positive association between CSR and FP. This means that the higher the level of CSR, the higher the FP. Management of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria should increasingly approach CSR and Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure (CSRD) issues with positive mind set thereby recognizing it as investment rather than liability. Finally, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) should come up with reporting standard on CSRD since CSR is beneficial to the government, the listed oil and gas companies and their stakeholders.    Keywords: Corporate, Social, Responsibility, Financial, Performance.
