ABSTRACT

Online purchase intention is driven by motives; hence it is of paramount importance for online marketers to understand these motives aimed at adopting marketing strategies that will enhance productivity. Studies on motives of online purchase intention have been conducted but inconsistent findings abound in literature; obviously a need exists to provide clearer understanding of these inconsistencies. Consequently, the study adopted meditational analysis to examine the mediating effect of trust on the influence of subjective norm on online purchase intention. A survey research was conducted on 280 respondents that were selected using purposive sampling. Inferential statistics (Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling) were used for data analysis and hypotheses testing while bootstrapping was used to determine mediation effect. The findings show that trust is a full mediator on the influence of subjective norm and purchase intention and recommends online marketers should build trust towards online vendors/companies by building and maintaining positive image.

Deparment of Actuarial Science and Insurance, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji- Arakeji.

ABSTRACT

This paper analyses the impact of economic recession on the performance of the insurance companies quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange especially looking at the effect of the economic recession on the premium income, the profitability and the performance of the shares of the quoted insurance companies. The study adopted ex-post facto research design to look at what obtained in the last recession in Nigeria between 2014-2016 to serve as a guide to insurance companies as the country is entering another recession in 2020   This design was used because the data for the study were available already, which the researcher cannot manipulate. The study sample consists of ten (10) insurance companies quoted on the Nigerian stock exchange these companies were chosen purposively because of the availability of their annual reports from 2014 to 2016. Secondary data was sourced from the annual reports and accounts of insurance companies from 2014-2016. The data gathered were analyzed using percentages and the hypotheses were tested using regression statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The performances of the quoted insurance companies before the recession were compared with the performances during the recession. The study found that economic recession had significant negative impact on the gross premium written of insurance companies. This means that insurance companies suffer in terms of gross premium written during recession. Whereas, the impact on the profit after tax of insurance companies was positive, although the positive impact is little which is quite amazing. The study also found that economic recession did not have significant impact on the earning per share of insurance companies. the researcher recommends that management should be more innovative in recession, cut down on management expenses and explore investment opportunities to make up for underwriting losses.

ABSTRACT

As the western culture offers classic microfinance as the way to do business and in recent years, postmodernism has nominated a new model-microcredit to supersede the statuesque. The Islamic civilization, on the other hand, has always offered the concept of spiritual microfinance as a way to stimulate business and get closer to God simultaneously. Such a model results in a more fulfilling work life and career. It is a radically different approach to doing business that emphasizes making money as its main goal, but not for the sake of wealth alone. The entire money making process can be sanctified so that it becomes a holy and noble pursuits. For this to happen, however, microfinance houses needs to completely change their focus. Accordingly Islamic microfinance focus on profit/loss sharing by using the funds on economic generating, investing and trading activities to make a profit and share that profit with all the depositors and shareholders, whilst protecting the fabric of our society without engaging in activities prohibited and harmful to the society. Despite the huge demand for Islamic microfinance among Muslims communities due to the high rate of unemployment and poverty, Islamic microfinance do not keep pace with upraising demand.  Following the above premise this paper tries to answer these critical questions; Why not mix microfinance passion for business with beneficial social goals? Why not simultaneously fix the world especially among rural dwellers and avail microfinance houses even richer? In order to answer the above this research paper dwell on the impeccable vision and salvaging activities of illustrious personage and veteran of many years standing from Bangladesh in his quest for promoting economic development and eradication of poverty among rural dwellers. This paper considered Islamic microfinance as a tool that could be used to achieve the necessary economic and social security that a country would need today leading to the overall development of humanity. The study suggested for the proliferation of more Islamic microfinance which can be used to mitigate the negative impact of the high unemployment rate among the youth in Muslim countries and as well stimulates social entrepreneurs who must focus on the goal of having a healthy income statement and simultaneously championing some sort of social healing enterprise.

ABSTRACT

The links between economy and the environment are manifold. The environment provides the resources and acts as a sink for emissions and waste while the economy through productive ventures pollutes the environment. This study explores the causal linkages between economic growth and environmental degradation in Nigeria using annual time series data spanning from 1964 to 2014 sourced from World Bank development indicators2019. The data analysis techniques used include unit root test, co-integration test, and Granger causality. The result of unit root test shows that all the variables are integrated of order one I (1) while Johansson co-integration test result indicates no long run relationship between the variables. The Granger causality result indicates a bi-directional causality between real GDP per capita a proxy for economic growth and carbon dioxide emission a surrogate for environmental degradation, economic growth squared and environmental degradation, population growth and environmental degradation a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to population growth as well as absence of causality between trade openness and environmental degradation. The study, therefore recommends that government should formulate policies that protects the environment without limiting economic growth and that people should be enlightened about the effects of rapid population growth on the environment.

Department of Business Administration and Management, Federal Polytechnic Ukana, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

This paper explains the way risks and effects can travel more quickly during recession. It characterizes economic recession as a decrease in the economic growth in Nigeria and gives possible suggestions for combating the contraction of growth and decrease in consumer spending. The economic meltdown engulfed completely in the country’s economy with a varying degree of recessional impact. This paper emphasizes on the business opportunities which have so far remained untouched by the slump in the global economy but you will see the growth rates slowing down by the end of the year. The economic recession in Nigeria emerged like a thunderbolt at the instance of the negative growth rates recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This admission was as a result of an official declaration on the situation of the masses in Nigeria and what they have been going through for sometimes now. The present economic situation is as a result of the absence of a clear policy directed by the government. According to the minister of state for petroleum resources Dr. Ibe Nwachukwu as at December 2018, crude oil production was expected to increase from the level of 2 million barrels per day, to a state of 2.5 million barrels per day by the end of 2019 but statistics shows that instead of the quantity increasing, its rather reducing as it was recorded or as record has it was 1.94 million barrels per day as at January 31. In this article, some possible measures and way forward has been provided, in other words this work has conclusively shown that risk in business is of high side during recession due to the downfall in gross economic growth, and some ideological points are been released or made mentioned as a way of tackling economic recession in Nigeria and perhaps the world at large.

IDRITH AHMED YUSUF   AND   USMAN MUHAMMAD BATURE

Department of Accountancy, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Bauchi State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The significance of keeping proper books of accounts and sound accounting practices has been stressed in ensuring proper financial management in SMEs. In this study, we investigate the record keeping practices utilized by SMEs in six north eastern states of Nigeria, through data based on responses to a structured questionnaire from 270 SMEs in the region. We report that majority of SMEs fail to maintain complete accounting records as they think there is no need to keep accounting records and that it exposes their financial position, it was equally reported that, there was a strong positive relationship between joint influence of Accounting record keeping practices and the performance of SMEs in North Eastern Nigeria. It was then recommended that training programs must be organized to sensitize owners/managers on the need to maintain proper books of accounts.
