Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated Computer Assisted Instructional Media (CAIM) as an interactive instructional technique using computer to present instructional material and monitor the learning that takes place. It uses the combination of text and graphics, sound and video in the learning process. This program helps the students’ progress at their own pace, assisting them in learning and application of the material. It was designed to see the effect of Computer Assisted Instructional Media as a supplementing strategy on the academic performance of secondary school students in the subject of Fine Arts. Some of the objectives of the study include to: find out the relative effect of Computer Assisted Instructional Media (CAIM) as a supplementing and important strategy on the academic performance of students in Fine Arts, explore the difference between treatment effect in students with natural creative ability and those without and find out the influence of gender on their performance and enrollment in Fine Arts when exposed to computer assisted instructional media. The secondary school students studying Fine Arts drawn from SS11 class at Ebonyi State College of Education secondary School constitute the population of the study and equally selected as a sample of the study. The sample students were assigned into two groups (experimental and control group). They were equated on the basis of their performance score in previous semesters in the subject of Fine Arts and they comprised of forty (40) students. One group was randomly sampled by teaching them a chosen topic in Fine Arts without using computer to stand as a sample of the study while the other group was taught using CAIM. Both the groups were taught through practical method and Computer Assisted Instructional Media (CAIM) being used as a supplementary strategy for the experimental group. The experiment lasted for three weeks and data were collected from 80 students of the two groups. After obtaining the scores, the lists were prepared for each group and the means, standard deviations, differences between mean were computed with significance between the mean scores of both the groups on the variable of previous performance that was tested at 0.5 levels by applying t-test. At the end, it was found that Computer Assisted Instructional Media (CAIM) was effective for both male and female students which led to the recommendations made. Areas of further research like, conducting similar research in other subjects like biology, English language etc, was suggested.

CURRICULUM CONTENTS’ ADEQUACY AND TECHNICAL SKILLS ACQUISITION IN NIGERIA

GIDEON, V. O. (Ph.D)

Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER).

ABSTRACT

The polytechnics focused on the impartation of technical skills so as to prepare students for employment or self-reliance. However, many polytechnic graduates probably do not possess the skills required in the labour market. This study examined the relationships between curriculum contents’ adequacy and technical skills acquisition in selected South-West Nigerian polytechnics. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 5,960 Higher National Diploma (HND) II full time students of the nine sampled polytechnics in South-West Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was applied to select 596 (ten percent) students in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical/Electronics and Computer Engineering Departments. The research instrument used for data collection was “Skills Acquisition and Graduates’ Employment Questionnaire (SAGEQ)”   The hypothesis that stated that there is no significant relationship between curriculum contents’ adequacy and technical skills acquisition was tested at.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The tested hypothesis showed that; there was a significant relationship between curriculum contents’ adequacy and graduates’ employment hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. The study recommended more practical work to complement theories in polytechnics; provision of modern resources and qualified staff for impartation of skills, the curricula of polytechnics should be reviewed to align with labour market’s demands and the gap between school and work place should be bridged through Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

*Department of Public Administration, Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State, Nigeria **Department of Public Administration, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The paper is to proffer solution to the problems of financing higher education in Nigeria. Many people have continued to clamour for free university education. It sounds exciting and noble. However, in the real sense of it, someone has to pay for it. Those who are preaching that gospel believe government should do everything for her people. University education generates public as well as private interests. One thing is absolutely clear, the level of education funding has continued to decline thereby inflicting serious damage on the system of which only a massive contribution of funds can help to rejuvenate it. The author used secondary sources of information. It was recommended among others that federal and state governments should invigorate scholarship schemes, not only as a source of funding but also as a means of identifying and developing productive high level manpower. It was concluded that the provision of education or should be shared responsibility among the federal, state, private sectors and parents.

EACHER WORKPLACE MOTIVATION FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE IN TERTIARY EDUCATION

MANSURAH MOHAMMED BUBA ARDO AND ABBA ABUBAKAR

College of Continuing Education, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, Nigeria

Abstract

Tertiary education aims to train relevant manpower for effective community service and national development. To achieve this however, the teacher who is at the centre of the education enterprise, must be adequately motivated. Motivation is viewed as the process whereby a superior officer influences subordinates to perform their duties satisfactorily. It is the process that deals with influencing teachers in a positive way so as to work for the achievement of the national objectives of education. Work motivation therefore, refers to a set of internal and external forces that initiate work-related behaviour, and determine its form, direction, intensity and duration In tertiary education in Nigeria, teacher training is bedeviled by inadequate professional development and motivation of teachers. Consequently, the teaching profession in Nigeria, characterized by poor funding, poor salary structure, delay or non-payment of salaries and other fringe benefits, and poor working conditions, has been held in low esteem. In order for teachers to perform their duties effectively, they can be motivated by way of regular payment of salaries, fringe benefits, such as allowances, bonuses, regular promotions, provision of good working condition, maintaining high degree of relationship and improving the teachers’ general wellbeing. When teachers and students are sufficiently motivated, it can direct behaviour towards particular goals which lead to improved performance. The paper suggested that governments and all stakeholders in the education enterprise rise up to the challenge of improving the condition of teachers so as to increase their performance.
