Abstract

The study determined teachers’ perception of the application of physical environmental plan by proprietors of private secondary schools in Awka Education Zone of Anambra State.  One research question guided the study and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study was a descriptive survey. The population of the study comprised 734 teachers in private secondary schools in Awka Education Zone of Anambra State. Through simple random sampling, the researcher sampled 30% of teachers in the Zone. This amounted to 220 teachers as sample for the study. The instrument of data collection was a structured questionnaire which was developed by the researcher and validated by three experts in education. Mean, standard deviation and t-test was used to analyze data for the study. Finding of the study revealed that proprietors of private secondary schools in Awka Education Zone apply environmental planning to a high extent. Finding of the study further showed that the proprietors planned for accessibility to the schools, fencing, availability of play grounds, spacious classrooms and provision of convenience spaces such as toilets and cafeteria. However, it was also revealed that proprietors of private secondary schools do not properly plan for staff rooms, school library, computer laboratory, science laboratory, providing safe parking space for visitors and staff and providing for appropriate security lighting system in and around the school premises. Teachers did not significantly differ in their opinion on the extent proprietors of private secondary schools apply physical environmental plan in Awka Education Zone. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made among others that the Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC) should scale up their school inspection and supervisory practices to ascertain the provision of standard offices or staff room blocks for teachers so as to motivate them for higher productivity and better education service delivery. It was also recommended that proprietors of private schools should seek financial and technical support from local or international and governmental or non-governmental organizations for the provision of science laboratory materials and information and communication technology facilities in their schools.

Many issues crops up in an attempt to influence behavior because group activity is to meet some fundamental objectives; leadership efforts to influence productivity are reflected by employee performance. Multiple theories have been developed to explain pattern of leaderships, no single style could suffice at all time and in all circumstances. The case is more difficult for public sector management because of social welfare and public interest, increased level of awareness, individual interests and factors of changing globalization to mention but a few. The consequential poor performance made people doubt the place of public sector administrators. This research has its core in the leadership styles and possible influences and actual impacts on performance of academic institutions. Thus the main objective is the influence of leadership style on the performance of academic staff. The methodology of this research work is survey and case study approach. The primary data was generated from questionnaires administered on 65 samples of 180, 2019 population size from the 12 academic departments out of which 42 were returned. Descriptive analysis of the 42 returned questionnaires indicates existence of relationship between leadership style and employee performance. Also, the results of Chi-Square indicate significant impact of leadership on performance; calculated values of 13.51 against the table value of 9.488 automatically reject the null hypothesis which states that there is no relationship between leadership and performance. Major findings include the existence of significant relationship between leadership and performance such that there is negative effect of poor leadership style on academic staff performance. For improved performance, such measures as motivation and delegations towards improved democratization and participation is recommended. The leadership-employee performance is adjudged to be good and by maintaining the tempo and making necessary adjustments, future leadership-employee relationship is bright.

Quasi-experimental design with pre and post-test, non-randomised and non-equivalent was adopted for data collection. The population for this study consisted of all upper-basic school pupils in Kaduna metropolis. Two schools were purposively sampled. The sample was categorised into one experimental group and one control group of fifty respondents each. The data collected were analysed using the percentage, mean, standard deviation and analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA) to test the two formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that: the general level of pupils’ achievement in reading comprehension was low before the treatment (42.79) but high after the treatment (77.76) irrespective of gender. The paper recommends that teachers of English language should wake up and move in line with modern trend in order to improve the teaching and learning of reading comprehension. Teacher trainers should re-modify the teacher training programmes to re-orientate the teachers toward the use of lexical quality instructional technique. Curriculum planners and developers should not be left out in this regard.
