INFLUENCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY PUPILS IN PAIKORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NIGER STATE, NIGERIA

This study examines influence of early childhood education on academic performance of primary pupils in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. Three hypotheses were tested. The study employed survey research design. The population of the study consists of school personnel (teachers and head teachers) and a sample of 188 school personnel (82 head teachers and 106 teachers) was selected through proportionate and simple random sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was “Early Childhood Education Questionnaire’’ (ECEQ) which measured pupils’ academic performance, writing skills and extra-curricular activities. The ECEQ was validated through face and content validity, and its reliability was determined using the test retest method and a coefficient index of 0.72 was obtained. The data analysis was made through the use of mean, standard deviation, and t-test statistics. The finding of the study indicated that there was a significant difference in opinions of school personnel (teachers and head teachers) on influence of early childhood education on academic performance of primary pupils in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State. The study further revealed that there was a significant difference in opinions of school personnel on influence of early childhood education on writing skills among primary school pupils in the Local Government Area. The study also found that there was no significant difference in opinions of school personnel on influence of early childhood education on participation in extra-curricular activities by the primary pupils. It is therefore, recommended that, Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) and Paikoro Local Education Authority should work in collaboration to establish pre-primary sections at each primary school across Paikoro Local Government Area. It was also suggested that quality teachers, trainings, facilities and equipment that are necessary and essential for pre-primary and primary schools should be provided for quality teaching and enhancement of academic performance and participation in extra-curricular activities by all categories of pupils in the Local Government Area.

EFFECT OF TRI-POLAR INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUE ON READING COMPREHENSION PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILORIN, NIGERIA

Reading comprehension is perceived to be very difficult to teach in Nigeria due to lack of perquisite knowledge of appropriate technique (s) by the teachers. This study therefore investigates the effect of reading comprehension performance at the literal, inferential, critical and creative levels of reading. Senior secondary school students within Ilorin metropolis were exposed to tri-polar instructional technique. The research design adopted was a quasi-experimental of pre-test, post-test, randomised equivalent control group of 2×4 factorial matrix. This design involved two groups (one experimental and one control). The population for the study was all the senior secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. One hundred (100) senior secondary two students participated in the study. Data collected were analysed using the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and the t-test at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant difference in the reading comprehension performance of senior secondary school students exposed to the tri-polar instruction technique than those exposed to the conventional technique based on the four levels of reading comprehension. The study concluded that tri-polar instruction technique was effective in teaching reading comprehension in senior secondary schools. It was recommended that English language teachers should review their techniques of teaching reading comprehension and adopt tri-polar instructional technique so as to engage interactive activities capable of sustaining students’ interest in reading.

IMPROVING TERTIARY EDUCATION SYSTEM IN NIGERIA FOR DEVELOPMENT: CHARTING A WAY FORWARD

Knowledge has always been at the core of any country’s development process. More recently, the increased speed in the creation and dissemination of knowledge makes it an even more important ingredient in rapid economic development which is only achieved through a better tertiary education system. Nonetheless, the quality of most of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions leaves much to be desired. This is a serious problem that hampers efforts to move toward a knowledge based economy. Hence, this paper aimed at finding out the importance of knowledge for a new Nigerian economy, the key problems of tertiary education and what can be done to bring about improvement in the standard of tertiary education. To achieve these objectives, the paper utilized secondary sources and made use of innovation culture theory to provide a theoretical orientation to this study. The result of the investigation reveals that knowledge is central to development. Finding also shows that the key problems of the Nigerian education system are access, quality and funding. However, in order to improve access to, quality and funding of tertiary education in Nigeria, government must harness the contribution of the private sector and put together a strategy for the use of ICT in the education sector. The paper conclude that Nigeria can build the foundations of a knowledge driven economy by generating a critical mass of educated people whose skills are continuously refined through lifelong learning and the progressive upgrade of the education system. The paper therefore recommends that the focus area of tertiary education should be providing good quality, well targeted, and timely education and skills.

SOCIAL CHALLENGES AND TEACHERS IMPARTING VALUES ON SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS IN PORT HARCOURT CITY, RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA

The study examined social challenges and teachers imparting values on senior secondary students in Port Harcourt City, Rivers State Nigeria. To achieve this, 4 objectives were drawn from the aggregated interactions of the independent variable (social challenge) and dependent variable (imparting values). The study adopted the correlational research design. A sample of 160 respondents or teachers participated in the study. A 40-item 2 experts (i.e. 1 Sociology of Education, and 1 Measurement and Evaluation lecturer in IAUE) validated 4-point scale self-structured instrument titled “Social Challenges and Teachers Imparting of Values on Students Scale” (SCTIVS) with a reliability coefficient of 0.742 was used to elicit data analyzed using Pearson product moment coefficient (PPMC) at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that: morality (r= 0.025), tribalism (r= 0.027), examination malpractice (r= 0.015), and misuse of technology (r = 0.003) affected teachers imparting of values on senior secondary students in Port Harcourt Local Government Area Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria. The study recommended that: teachers need to possess and exhibit high moral standards that would enable them mentor and instill values for students effectively participating and profiting from schooling process. Alongside, teachers should eschew all forms of tribalism and other nepotistic acts that would impede their ability to overcome inhibiting traits that could affect students school learning.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SCHOOL-BASED SUPERVISION IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS, BORNO STATE, NIGERIA”

The study compares school-based supervision in public and private senior secondary schools in terms of: classroom supervision, teachers’ utilization of instructional materials, teachers planning of lesson and relationship among management supervision of teachers in classroom, utilization of instructional materials and teachers planning of lesson in Maiduguri metropolis secondary schools. Four hypotheses were raised and tested to guide the study. Survey and causal comparative research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of all the 48 school managers in 16 public senior secondary schools and 150 school managers in 50 senior secondary school in Maiduguri Metropolis all sampled for the study. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Findings revealed a significant difference between management supervision of teachers in public and private schools on classroom, there was a significant difference between management supervision of teachers in public and private schools on utilization of instructional materials, there was a significant difference between management supervision of teachers in public and private schools on lesson plan all in favor of private schools, there was a strong positive relationship between supervision of teachers in classroom and planning of lesson, there was a positive moderate relationship between supervision of teachers in classroom and utilization of instructional materials, there was a moderate positive relationship between utilization of instructional materials and planning of lesson. Based on the findings it was recommended among others that Borno State Government should organized training and workshop to school managers of public Senior Secondary Schools on supervision of teachers in classroom, utilization of instructional materials, and teachers planning of lesson.

CHALLENGES AFFECTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF STRATEGIC PLANS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OTOUCHA EDUCATION ZONE OF ANAMBRA STATE

The study investigated the challenges affecting the implementation of strategic plans in secondary schools in Otoucha Education Zone of Anambra State. Two research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study was a descriptive survey and the population of the study comprised 26 principals and 680 teachers in public secondary schools in Otoucha Education Zone of Anambra State. Through simple random sampling, the researcher sampled 30% of teachers in the Zone. The instrument of data collection was a structured questionnaire which was developed by the researcher and validated by three experts in education. Mean, standard deviation and t-test was used to analyze data for the study. Findings revealed that principals implement strategic plans in secondary schools in Otoucha Education Zone of Anambra State to a low extent. It was also revealed that non-availability of fund, poor institutional leadership, lack of qualified staff, lack of interest on the part of stakeholders, poor communication skills, poor knowledge of the strategy implementation plan, lack of teaching resources and lack of physical facilities are some of the challenges affecting the implementation of strategic plans in secondary schools in Otoucha Education Zone. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the opinion of principals and teachers on the extent of implementation and challenges affecting the implementation of strategic plans in secondary schools in the Zone. It was recommended based on the findings that the Ministry of Education and the Post Primary School Service Commission should regularly organize training programmes (short courses, seminars, workshops and conferences) were principals will be educated on strategic planning and its implementation process in schools. It was also Principals are encouraged to be innovative in their thinking through improving their collaborative initiatives with private experts in the area of resource provision and development of the human capacity in their schools.

Teachers play an important role for teaching science process skills through planning and arranging learning activities and teaching how to reach scientific information’s. Considering that teachers are the main source in educating individuals, there is a need for current and prospective teachers to acquire science process skills and ways of teaching it to students in a science classroom. Scientific process skills (SPS) are fundamental scientific methods to achieve desired knowledge which are useful in problem solving in our immediate environment. Qualitative case study was adopted in this study that consisted of all the eight chemistry teachers teaching in chemistry department of Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri as population. A semi structured questionnaire procedure was used to collect data. The result of the study revealed that teachers’ conceptual understanding of SPS is weak cutting across all the teachers in the department. They were oriented on the few assessment procedures such as those used in setting up equipment, data collection, safety and observing color but weak in opinion and ideas assessment indicators about SPS. These affects the accuracy and appropriateness of the teacher’s selection of SPS assessment in chemistry learning. Therefore we recommend that the need for teachers to be professionals as one’s professional knowledge which is informed by one’s professional background, experience and perceptions can be seen from teachers’ behaviors. Involve students in the laboratory works in order to raise the science process skills. Develop teaching strategies used in teaching within the laboratory premises for better and appropriate assessment of the students learning ability. Use of integrated teaching approaches in a single lesson can create more opportunities for inculcation and acquisition of SPS in the classroom.

EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL EMANCIPATION IN NIGERIA.

Secondary education is planned to offer diversified curriculum that could among others, provide entrepreneurial, technical and vocational job specific skills for self-reliance, and for agricultural, industrial, commercial and economic development. Basically it is meant to prepare the school leavers for the world of work and help them to contribute positively to societal growth and development. Today, the secondary school system in Nigeria is far from achieving this purpose. This paper therefore, examined how secondary education could be effectively managed to promote the realisation of its objectives and make its products essentially autonomous and relevant to the demands of today’s competitive global markets. In doing this, the paper examined the concepts of effective management and socio-economic emancipation among others. The paper also inter-relates the state of education and socio-economic emancipation in Nigeria. The challenges facing effective management of secondary education and true emancipation are also examined. The paper identified problems like poor implementation of government policies, poor funding of education sector, corruption and mismanagement of available resources among other challenges hindering true emancipation and effective management of secondary education in Nigeria. The paper concludes that no meaningful socio-economic and political emancipation can be attained unless the identified challenges are effectively addressed. The paper suggested among others, that adequate funds should be made available to the education sub-sector and laudable educational policies should be faithfully implemented so that the system could run smoothly and its objectives achieved.

EXTENT OF UTILIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PROGRAMMES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN DELTA STATE

This study examined the extent of utilization of educational and vocational guidance and counselling programmes for enabling secondary school students’ participation in sustainable national development in Delta State. Three research questions guided the study. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised all the 471 counselors from 471 secondary schools in Delta State. Sample size for the study is 236 counselors (50%) selected from 236 secondary schools in Delta State using the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. A 42-item questionnaire developed by the researcher and titled “Extent of Utilization of Educational and Vocational Guidance and Counselling Programmes for Secondary School Students’ Participation in Sustainable National Development Questionnaire (EUEVGCPSSSPSNDQ)” was the instrument for collecting data. The questionnaire was validated by three experts from guidance and counseling department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State and reliability of the instrument ascertained through a pilot test. Data obtained from the counselors who were respondents were computed using the Cronbach Alpha method which gave internal consistency reliability coefficients of 0.82, 0.77 and 0.86 for the three clusters and were added up and divided to give an overall value of 0.82. Data were analyzed using only mean score at 2.50 rating. Findings of the study indicated among others that the extent to which educational and vocational guidance and counselling programmes were utilized for enabling secondary school students’ participation in sustainable national development in Delta State were to a low. It was also discovered through the findings of the study that the extent to which the identified challenges which included poor funding of guidance and counselling programmes, inadequate materials resources including lack of ICT facilities, lack of time, and insufficient utilization of professional counsellors in most schools especially in the remote areas, among others, hindered utilization of educational and vocational guidance and counselling programmes, were to a high extent. From the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that the secondary school principals under strict supervision of the Delta State Post Primary Education Board (PPEB) should ensure that the educational guidance and counselling programme is highly propagated and utilized in the schools to aid students’ educational development for enabling their participation in sustainable national development in Delta State.

EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TWO STUDENT-CENTERED METHODS OF TEACHING AS PEDAGOGICAL STRATEGIES ON TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two students-centered methods of teaching and conventional instructional method as pedagogical strategies on tertiary institution students’ academic achievement in measurement and evaluation. A sample of 192, 200 level students were drawn across three colleges of education in South-west, Nigeria and were used for the study. Students’ achievement test in measurement and evaluation, lesson plan, a collaborative learning guide and individualized instructional techniques guide were the instruments used for data collection. Mean, t-test and analysis of co variance (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. The result indicates significant differences on the effectiveness of the three teaching methods (collaborative learning, individualized instruction techniques and conventional method). The post-test mean scores showed that collaborative learning and individualized instructional techniques had effect on students performance in measurement and evaluation and that the performance of students taught with collaborative learning and students that were exposed to individualized instructional techniques was superior to the performance of students taught with conventional method with (73.19, 72.19 and 53.94). It was also revealed that teaching methods had significant effect (p > .05) on students performance in measurement and evaluation (F = 404.950) was greater than the critical value of 2.30. The mean score results demonstrated that collaborative learning was the most effective pedagogical strategy followed by individualized instructional techniques while conventional instructional method was the least effective pedagogical strategy. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made; measurement and evaluation lecturers should adopt the use of collaborative learning and individualized instructional techniques, Administrators of higher institution should teach their lecturers on the use of this new strategies and that usage of conventional instructional method should be minimized.

The survey determined the influence of the availability of Laboratory Facilities on Academic Performance of students in Biology in Senior Secondary School of Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State, It adopted a descriptive survey research design and was guided by two specific objectives and two (2) research questions. It sought to find out to examine the Availability of Biology Laboratory Facilities and to determine the influence of the availability of laboratory facilities on the student academic performance in biology in Senior Secondary School of Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State. Descriptive survey research design was employed for the study, a population of seventy six (76) teachers, due to the population was not large the researcher used all population a total of (76) respondents were used for the study, the total number of biology teachers of secondary schools in jalingo LGA is seventy six (76) for this reason, there was no need for sampling. The instrument used for data collection was a researcher developed questionnaire tagged Availability of Laboratory Facilities and Academic Performance of Biology (ALFAPQ). The questionnaire has sixty (10) items. Descriptive statistics and mean were used to answer research questions. It was revealed from the study that most of the facilities are not available in study area. From the opinion of the respondents wall chart, petri dish, beakers, chemicals and hand lens are available in some of the secondary schools. Also the respondents also opinioned that facilities Biology laboratory such as Bunsen burner, microscope, first aid box, fire extinguisher, dissecting kits and laboratory assistant are not available. Also, the result reveals that students’ academic performance can be influence positively by the use of chart and beakers, laboratory equipment in explaining the Abstract topics, microscope, and laboratory assistant. Based on the above problems, it was recommended that The school management should endeavor to make provision for laboratory facilities that will enhance teaching and learning biology in their schools., Government should increase the budgetary allocation to schools so as to enhance their running cost and to enable them to get the laboratory equip this will help in the practical application of biology knowledge and Supervisors and inspectors from the Ministry of Education should strictly monitor the frequency of use of laboratory equipment by both teachers and students. This will ensure a hitch free utilization of the available science laboratory equipment in teaching and learning of Biology and such process will encourage students to do science of biology instead of learning about it.

THE DECLINED CONSUMPTION OF COCOYAM (XANTHOSOMA SAGITTIFOLIUM) (L.) AMONG THE OWO PEOPLE OF ONDO PROVINCE OF SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA, 1850-1960.

Cocoyam was one of the indigenous tuberous crops that sustained the population of Owo in pre-colonial times. The crop was produced as a complement of yam, it was consumed in large quantity especially during the annual planting period. Red cocoyam was stronger than the white species (colosasia esculenta). In recent times, red cocoyam species was hardly accessed by the consumers and the basis for its disappearance has greatly been marred with series of assumptions. The research methodology primarily made use of oral interview, conducted on one hundred (100) people in the study area. Data were analysed from historical perspective. It was established that red cocoyam suffered a great set back in the 1850s, consuquent upon the destructive effect of the 19th Centyr’s Yoruba wars that ravaged the indigenous crops of the North-eastern Yoruba communities including Owo. The economic base of Owo was targeted and plundered with impunity by the bellingerents. A stronger force was the wave of colonial threat of the 20th Century, which plunged the indigenous agricultural base into unending superfulous colonial methodical structure. The study gained insights into the significance of the crop to the people of Owo of Ondo Province of Southwestern Nigeria. Such among other findings was that the food crop was a veritable source of nutritional and economic values, it also established that the crop had the potentials of reducing food scarcity and alleviating poverty among the post colonial people of Owo for sustainable development.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MEETING POINT OF THE THREE PROMINENT RELIGIONS IN NIGERIA

Religion is a belief in one or more gods. This definition is applicable to the three prominent religions in Nigeria i.e. Christianity, Islam and Traditional religion. This paper therefore examines the meeting place of the three which is applicable to the three religious beliefs. Since these religions are practicable in Nigeria there are some things that are common to them. They are belief, intermediary, place and mode of worship, leadership, material Artefact, clothes, festival, Holy Books, songs, titles. All these things are found in these religions but with different names and ways of doing it. The methodology employed for this paper is oral interview with the leaders of the religions and the adherents. Oral questions were asked by the authors from the respondents and their responses are documented and used to form the tables. The paper concludes that all the believers or worshippers of these religions should neither underrate one and other and should nor to preach against one and other. The religions have many things in common but what differs is medium of communication because one of the religions says “Thou shall not judge”. The conclusion reached is that these religions are account of God in different ways and manners. The findings reveals that the three religions were doing the same things in different ways. The paper is concluded by given recommendations.

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ READING HABITS: A STUDY OF AMINU SALEH COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AZARE, BAUCHI STATE NIGERIA

This paper reports the findings of a study that investigates the influence of social media on student’s reading habits. The study adopts a descriptive survey design. Structured questionnaire was used to collect responses from two hundred and twenty NCE students randomly selected from Aminu Saleh College of Education Azare, Bauchi State Nigeria. Data collected for this study were analysed using frequency distributions and percentages. Based on the findings, students spent more hours using the social media platforms than reading their books. The study recommends that students should be encouraged to join literary society in order to develop their interest in reading and reading competitions should be organized by the college management every academic session to encourage students’ reading habits.

INFLUENCE OF PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL EXPERIENCE ON PUPILS SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION IN KATSINA STATE.

The study was designed to examine “The influence of pre-primary school experience on pupils’ social skills acquisition in Katsina state” It considered a research questions hypotheses which bordered on the difference in the social skills performance of preschool children who are exposed to early childhood education compare to the children who are not exposed to early childhood education. Three hundred and eighty-one (381) primary one pupil from the ten (10) local government areas of the state. In dependent t-test sample statistics was used. The result revealed significant difference in the social skill performance of primary school pupils between those that participated in early childhood education and those that are not exposed to early childhood education. The null hypothesis which stated that there is no significant difference in the social skills performance of pupils taught in the early childhood education and those that are not is rejected.

Human potential and material resources can be harnessed through Effective and efficient physical sports education. This paper therefore highlights objectives of physical education is to promote physical fitness to the highest level among the participant. Qualified Physical education teachers have the responsibility as role model with determinant lifestyle that promote fitness behavior among secondary schools in Bichi. The paper enumerates gains which students may experience as a result of participating in regular, vigorous exercises. The paper view inadequate and inappropriate preparation has been identified as a major barrier for a generalist to produce a quality physical education program as prescribed by the curriculum. The researcher uses descriptive survey research design and self-developed questionnaire with four 4-point likert rating scale used to collect data for the study. This implies that experience of physical education teacher will significantly determine physical fitness level of the students. Recommendations measures that can ensure better quality of life for everyone now and tomorrow are also highlighted. Adequate training and retaining sportsmen for laying solid foundation from primary to tertiary level was also advocated. Government should make efforts at improving the attitude of students to practical classes by providing physical fitness laboratories for practical’s, so that the learning experiences of the students can become more meaningful and at the same time interesting. The paper concludes on a hopeful note that problems which could impede the successes can overcome through proper planning

Comme théorie, nous avons employé la théorie sociologique. La méthodologie utilisée est l’analyse textuelle. Cette étude a pu montrer que l’emploi des proverbes, des anecdotes, des contes, l’évocation du chasseur Bolo, de l’importance de certains animaux domestiques et de la signification de certains tatouages concourent à l’apprentissage de la morale, de l’histoire et des coutumes des yorubas d’Oke-Ogun de l’Etat d’Oyo au Nigéria.
This paper examined the Yoruba orality in Mama Tutù et Cris Nègres of Ramonu Sanusi and other elements that contribute to the teaching of moral, history and customs of Yoruba land. Sociological theory was used and the methodology was textual analysis. The article was able to establish that, proverbs, anecdotes, tales, discussion on importance of Bolo, a hunter, as well as some domestic animals and the significance of tatous gear towards the learning of moral, history and customs of Yoruba group of Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State.

ICT as a revolution left no area of life untouched. ICTs play a vital role in educational institutions. It improves teaching and learning and contributes meaningfully to an economy. This paper was to examine the influence of ICT in Education in Borno state, Nigeria. In this regard, the study adopted questionnaire method for data collection, where 120 questionnaires were administered to lecturers, administrators and students from randomly selected schools and simple frequency count and charts in MS Excel were used to analyze the collected data from schools. The study found out that ICT’s role is very vital in teaching and learning, provides quality education and helps in economy. Also, the study further revealed that ICT facilities are not available in most of the school, most lecturers do not use ICT tools in class and students cannot interact with school activities anywhere.

THE EFFECT OF TIME MANAGEMENT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SURVEYING STUDENTS

The Effect of Time Management on Academic Performance of surveying Students in the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi cannot be over emphasized. Time Management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent. A survey design was adopted for the study. Three research questions guided the study. A hundred and three questionnaires were administered to 103 (50%) of 206 respondents that were used for the study. Data collected were analyzed using mean on a five point Likert rating scales. The result revealed that the ability to put each item in their proper position, set priorities and decide how to complete all required task are vital to surveying Students, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi for a successful academic performance. Based on the findings it was concluded that surveying Students need to apply time management skills in order to be successful in their academic pursuit. It was recommended among others that surveying Students time management skills be identified and applied so as to improve academic performance in the Polytechnic.

TEACHING AS AGAINST LECTURING, IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL GRADUATES: A CASE STUDY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES TEACHING

With the growing concern over the quality of graduates from Nigerian universities, the universities should re-examine the lecturing method of Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) currently being adopted. This work therefore sought to enquire into whether lecturing, as against actual teaching, is the appropriate method universities in Nigeria should adopt in order to produce transformational graduates. Using teaching of Environmental Sciences as case study and adopting survey method, it obtained data from Lecturers and Students of Department of Estate Management from Nigerian universities. The data obtained was analysed with simple percentages. It was found that majority of the respondents agreed that actual teaching, as against lecturing, is the more effective method of teaching. This work therefore advocates for a change from lecturing to actual teaching, in Nigerian universities so as to produce transformational graduates from the universities. In this regard, suggestion is also made that university lecturers should be made to undergo teacher training.

ASSESSMENT OF SCHOOL FACILITIES MAINTENANCE IN NIGERIA FOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING PROCESS. (A CASE STUDY OF NORTH EASTERN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS)

This study assessed the maintenance of school facilities for effective teaching process in public senior secondary schools in north eastern Nigeria. The researcher interested to determine the extent to which public senior secondary schools utilized preventive maintenance, used replacement maintenance, applied periodic maintenance and consideration attached to emergency maintenance. The study employed cross-sectional survey design and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The population of the study is 5121 respondents and the study sample stood at 357 respondents. The study covered all public senior secondary schools in north eastern Nigeria. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect relevant data. To give the general description of the data, frequency and simple percentages were used for demographic data; mean and standard deviation were used to answer the four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated and the testing was done using independent sample t-test. The instrument was validated by four experts, two from educational admin and planning and two were selected from test and measurement. The instrument was pilot tested using test re-test method and the reliability index was 0.808. The study concludes that facilities maintenance was in a moderate extent in some state because of their the good Administration and policies. School facilities were in a good shape but currently deteriorated due to poor maintenance of school facilities. It was recommended that both male and female teachers in every public senior secondary school in the state should be encouraged to utilize preventive maintenance in their respective schools. Day public secondary schools’ administrators should use part of their internally generated revenue to support periodic maintenance. Ministry of Education officials should monitor and supervise schools on regular basis to ensure that the four maintenance approaches are put in practice for the effectiveness of teaching process in public senior secondary schools in north eastern Nigeria.

USING THE UNIFIED THEORY OF ACCEPTANCE AND USE OF TECHNOLOGY TO ASCERTAIN LOW PATRONAGE OF VIRTUAL TEACHING AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF ENGLISH IN SULEJA LGA OF NIGER STATE

It has been reported that teachers in secondary schools are skeptical concerning virtual teaching even in this era of Covid19 pandemic that has totally kept students out of school. This study was carried out to investigate reasons responsible for this pessimistic attitude of English teachers in embracing Virtual teaching in Suleja LGA of Niger State. The study adopted a survey research design and made use of 21-item structured questionnaire validated by two specialists, in computer and English which yielded reliability co-efficient of 0.87. It was administered to ninety English teachers in twenty secondary schools. The 21items were based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. Data collected were analyzed using percentages. The study revealed among others, that virtual teaching according to teachers’ perception is ineffective, teachers lack prerequisite ICT knowledge to sufficiently embrace virtual teaching; schools, teachers, and students do not have sufficient ICT facilities that can support the system. The study therefore recommends that English language teachers should be given specific ICT training and deliberate policies that would make virtual teaching compulsory in secondary schools enacted.
